your definition is more "metalcorish" breakdown as "modern" breakdown.

a breakdown that comes to mind is the one in the last minute of Domination - Pantera YouTube - Pantera - Domination (Live Video)

I don't know enough about older bands, but breakdown have always existed.

perhaps I can shed some light

Gold (AU) was brokedown to it's purest form around 3000 BC

Hope this helps.

Exactly! Did you know Pantera kind of 'copied' that riff from Raining Blood! Phil Anslemo stated so in an interview with metal hammer, but the guys from slayer were good friends with pantera at the time so they were fine with it. I'm not kidding! Listen to the two and see for yourself

As an example. They are the most 'breakdowny' kind of band that I can think of.

Breakdown
very popular in most styles of music which involve men wearing thier sisters pants screaming about thier ex girlfriends and period pains. a chugging action performed on guitar which only one arm is needed to perform, one armed retards, aswell as, normal retards, love this because, it's an excuse not to have a riff which takes time to write and practice to perfect, people who enjoy this usally start having fits and waving thier arms and legs around trying to be as gay as they can in the biggest amount of space possible.

I may be young but I'm sure as heck a lot more mature than you. Please leave the thread if you have nothing to contribute to it.

Wow guys, no need to be jerks. He's just asking the earliest metalcore style breakdown that you guys can think of.

(btw, I used to be one of those metalcore haters, until I realized that a lot of it is actually quite difficult to play. Have some respect for the musicianship, eh? a lot of these guys are probably better than you guys that are bashing them.)

Seriously, if you don't like it, just move on.

What is it we are constituting as a "breakdown" anyway? Often what most folks call a breakdown is actually just a bridge.
Also, I was not aware of breakdowns making a prominent appearance in metal.
I was under the impression that breakdowns, in the sense that most people are familiar with, didn't really make an appearance until hardcore hit the scene with acts such as SOIA, Minor Threat, Earth Crisis, Strife, etc.

Your quick guide to modern metal breakdowns -

This seems like a bit of a circular question to me.

If you're asking when the first "breakdown" happened, and defining "breakdown" as "like the middle section in Raining Blood", then the answer is "Raining Blood". Which isn't very useful.

The answer to your question is so tied in with your personal definition of the term that it's almost impossible to answer.

Not trying to be a jerk, but more trying to say that "breakdown" means many different things to so many people.

It's really not that difficult a question if you actually understand it... and his definition of a breakdown is not uncommon or exclusive to him.

Unfortunately, I just can't think of any breakdowns older than the slayer one that he mentioned.

I think the first modern sounding breakdown was in the last part of metallicas "one". Every instrument is playing the same monstrous rythm an it still stands up today as being quite brutal.

Return of the Vampire - Mercyful Fate

More than one. It's not an E chugging, drummer playing eighths kind of breakdown though.
