Smack by 3 Doors Down I believe was the first song I learned to play all the way through note for note and it felt great. I sucked it up, but I had a blast and was grinning ear-to-ear.

With or without you - U2

It was sweet to play and sing the song. Our bass player couldnt do the gig, I was the lead singer in the band so I picked up her bass and learned the lines from our guitar player.

I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. Three weeks after touching a bass for the first time, I played (and sang) with my little sis at a banquet for 150 people. Awesome memory!

Overrated by Less Than Jake. I even took the time to learn the "alternate" more active bass line because I had an ego trip and wanted to make myself look cool.

Stand By Me, by I don't know who. I know it's easy, but i was 10. We didn't even play the song properly, we just took the chord symbols and played them to the beat of the bass drum. I don't think any of our school music even had a bass clef?!

Iron Man, Black Sabbath. My 76 year old mom still instantly recognizes that song as "the one that Steven played over and over and over."

Smells Like Teen Spirit

I learned to read tabs and just started looking up every song I knew. This one was the easiest.

Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself". I was playing guitar in a band in college and our bassist really wanted to sing that song but he didn't want to play at the same time. So I shifted over to bass.

The first time we played it was at a fundraiser dance marathon. The power went out a few times during that song before we decided to quickly try shifting some power cords to other outlets and the breaker finally held. Our drummer did a fantastic job of keeping things going each time so we never completely stopped the song. It could have been a trainwreck but he kept it going so people never stopped dancing. He also gave us good cues so we could come back in around where we left off each time and we were SO glad to finally finish the song - and our set - without it happening again.

Talk about a baptism by fire.
