What happened to the "Jaco Pastorius Live in New York" series?

I have volume 4 (pictured below) and like it a lot, but I don't see these CDs around anymore...I was wanting to get the whole series. Were they maybe integrated with another set of releases maybe? Dropped altogether?

I thought they were bootlegs and that the family had campaigned to stop them being sold...?

Seriously? Oh wow...I'd see them for sale in legit record stores (HMV) and everything. That's a shame, because like I said vol. 4 was really good...sloppy, but good.

Jaco was way past his on prime on those .
IMO
I'd rather listen to about 10 other of his albums before that series.
But I must admit they are kinda of a cool series.

I can't speak to the other volumes, but 4 was very good...his playing was very tight and the places they went with their jamming was insane. The sound quality is not so hot to be sure, but it's such a fun listen.

Volume 4 was the 'best' of that series...I bought the 1st two NYC in a legit store just as I was about to climb onto a bus for a 5 hour ride. I had a Sony Discman with me (this was the early '90s, BTW) & I figured these 'new' Jaco finds would be perfect company.
I lasted about a minute; then I pretty much just scanned through both...I was stunned & I just burned about $35 on these.

EDIT-
I checked Amazon...IMO, Vol. 5 Raca was the best of the series.

Bah, I suppose that means that none of the money from the sales went to Jaco's family, either =/ In that case, I don't mind doing without.

Everything I've seen about these recordings said that they were bootlegs. I agree that they are a fun listen but at the same time way past his prime.

Man, what a blast from my early 90's past. I'm guilty of having purchased vols 1 -4 before realizing that they were not legitimate recordings. Certainly rough sound quality, and some loose playing here and there, but I have to tell you - I got an awful lot out of these recordings. There was definitely some magic happening here and there. And now that Hiram Bullock is no longer with us, there's one more reason to enjoy the music. For better or worse, these recordings were truly a snapshot in time....but there's plenty of stuff on there to remind us that Jaco was a menacing force with a bass in his hands.

This was the music that really introduced me to Jaco, then I went back to Invitation and Jaco - and then realized he was part of a band called Weather Report!!

live in NYC

I found these CDs at Borders like 6 years ago, and thought they must have been official. I still think they're awesome. Especially I Shot the Sheriff on Volume 2.

You can still find them on amazon and ebay, some as cheap as $4.

Vroom Vroom is right, they're a very important snapshot. I'd recommend them if you're really trying to study the guy. I found it really refreshing just to hear him in that setting.

That's how I felt back in the early 90's when I bought the bootleged VHS of the Jaco/Stern drug fest at the 55 Grand bar. There were some great moments on it, but it also broke my heart. The live in NY series are the same way, there are moments on there, but like some of the wasted-years youtube clips, I would hate for people to base their opinions of the impact of Jaco's huge contribution to the bass world on those recordings.

Yeah - that's the problem - I see many people on this forum saying they don't get Jaco and then ask what they have heard and they have missed out on all the great stuff there is on official recordings - very sad!

While we're at it...

Is the 'Punk Jazz' Anthology - it's a double CD I think - legit? And would any of its tracks have been on the Live in New York series?

Although I've got a good selection of Jaco, Weather Report, Joni Mitchell etc., I still eye this one off every so often.. you know, just something to add to the collection!

Cheers!

The 'Punk Jazz' compilation is legit, it was on Rhino records and they usually do a good job on releases and pay the artists what is due them. There are none of the bootleg Live in NYC tracks on there.

Of the semi-legit Jaco boots, I dig 'Standards Zone'. At least Jaco was aware of Brian Melvin recording him.

I have all 3...IIRC, Curtain Call is now on the "Illegal-Boot" list.
Also, Jaco is only on 1 track on Mr. Hands ("3AM")...a great track at that. On Dimeola's album...it's also 1 track ("Suite Golden Dawn").

Good link for Jaco's discography-

Well said. Just last week I just listened to 'Days of Wine and Roses' from this project. I played it for a keyboardist buddy on the way to a gig, and he was knocked out by Jaco's tone and subtle authority over the trio. Even at that stage of his career - and if you believe Milkowski, the condition he was in - Jaco still had "it."
