I hope this is in the right forum.
So, what ever happened to Sepultura? I used to dig them from the first album up until around Chaos A.D. Last album I bought was Agianst, and I thought it was a MAJOR disappointment. Heard a few tracks online and I noticed they have completely changed their sound from say, the ROOTS era. What gives? I am interesting in hearing peoples thoughts about why Sepultura has gone downhill in terms of heaviness and brutality.

Mind you, after Max left after the Astoria show in London, 95, the band collapsed. That Derrick Green guy just can't fill Max's shoes.
That said, max has been on a serious downward spiral since he left too. |

From the album 'Against' onwards, there is generally no more two-guitar approach to the songwriting. Replacement vocalist Derek Green occasionally picks up the guitar, but overall the sound is a lot thinner.
If you have a problem with 'Arise', you better check yo'self - as it predates both 'Chaos AD' and 'Roots'
As an aside, I caught these guys when they toured a couple of years ago, and they were brutal!

Even if the current material was not to my taste they could still play the old stuff with incredible force and conviction.
And just the other day, my guitarist plays me their new album. Just let me say, if anyone thinks Sepultura ain't 'metal' anymore, or have lost direction, give it a spin.

It's not bad, but it's nowhere near the calibur of Beneath the Remains or Arise, but it has its moments. Convicted in Life is a cool song with some cool riffs.

Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots are all great though.

That said: Post Max Sep/Soulfly =

I think thats how it went. |

I saw them play here in the city a few weeks ago, and I was totally floored, possibly the best show i've been to. Everyone was really into it, it was just a great vibe. |

Corrected in previous post. Indeed, I did mean to say Agianst.

As soon as they started having guest artists join in on the fun, I just didn't like them anymore; that's probably why I never liked Soulfy either (Wasn't the first Soulfy single with Fred Durst?).
The last pure Sepultura album, and the last good one in my opinion, was Arise. I had that on cassette and a wore it out. It had an awesome cover of Motorhead's Orgasmatron..
Regarding the breakup: I remember seeing an interview with Igor Cavalera. He said they had a contract with their manager, Gloria, for a couple of years and Max and her eventually got married. The rest of the band wanted to try a different manager, because she had become family, and they didn't want to mix family with business. Max took it the wrong way and left.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Max wrote it after he left Sepultura, I could be wrong though.... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
