The bass line kills. The drumming is awesome. The guitar solo is neat. The lyrics are cool. But it's all about that beginning for me. Instantly identifiable.

I honestly didn't think I liked Rush that much because of the Moving Pictures album, it's cool in it's own way, but not my bag. I gave Fly by Night a spin (I got a 3 record set of the first 3 Rush albums from my dad): I really like that Rush.
I think Tom Sawyer is easy to rally behind, because in terms of Rush it's a fairly simple song. But it's also a good example of making something odd timed feel natural. Those drum fills add a lot to the song.

Sometimes, when listening to music, I think about how it would feel to do whatever I'm listening to at the time at a great gig (as I'm sure we all do). That's one of the VERY few tracks that makes think what it would be like to be the drummer rather than the bass player.
I should say that I'm a big Geddy fan, before I get totally flamed. Hell, he even signed one of my basses.

I can't stand Neil Peart's lyrics. Probably the biggest reason that I'm not really a Rush fan even though I love Geddy's bass playing.
From my perspective it's the opening riff and those gloriously cheesy synths. It just makes it such a recognizable song. |

| | uncle petey? | | Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: outer banks, nc | | | What makes Tom Sawyer good? For me, it'd have to be the beautiful prose-style of Mark Twain. Dude was one of the best dialogue guys in American Literature. There are very few writers than can capture a Mississippi sunset as well as the dialect and put it on paper. Coupled with the witty and always entertaining characters of Huck Finn and Joe Harper, simply put, it's just a damn classic.
Cheers

To answer the OP, I like the drums and the odd time signature that Rush is famous for. I think Neil Peart is the heart beat of the band.
