What is the "New York Sound"?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've recently spoken with shop owners and luthiers who describe instruments as having that "New York Sound" ("like Sadowsky" one said). Problem is, I have no idea what they're talking about. I'm just curious because a bass I'm considering supposedly has that sound. I don't catch much live music since moving to the sticks. Could anyone provide me with some recordings to check out for a "New York Sound"?

Hiram Bullock's "Live at Manny's Car Wash." Will Lee's on that one, and prominent in the mix.

Marcus Miller, Will Lee, etc.

Basically a Fender Jazz Bass sound with boosted bass and treble (via Sadowsky's preamp)
