What are some good bass albums?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just wondered if anyone could tell me some albums/songs that are essential for any bassist and that would help with my playing, I already have BSSM and some RATM albums, and I'm thinking more along the lines of Jaco stuff and Victor Wooten or any other legendary bassists

Thanks, Rob

Jaco Pastorius' first album is very good (called Jaco Pastorius), i can't comment on Wooten and Miller and all the others cos i don't have any of their albums or really know their music.
Check the early Jamiroquai stuff, some really nice and tasty bass playing on there, especially Emergency on planet earth.
other than that, just listen to whatever you like and try to learn those basslines.

Metallica - Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Megadeth - Rust In Peace

I don't care if you're more into technically advanced stuff, or metal, or punk or dancing ballet with a pink tutu on.. These albums have some incredible bassing by some incredible bassists.

You might want to search the site at Bassplayer Magazine. I recall them listing several recordings that were "essential" listening for the well-rounded bassist a few years ago.

Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination
Vintersorg - Visions from the Spiral Generator

Opeth - Orchid
Opeth - Morningrise

Tool - Aenima

Except for the Tool album, all the rest are death metal oriented with fantastic bass playing.

I think any Tool album will do.

Deloused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta (Flea playing bass)

Frances The Mute - The Mars Volta (Juan Alderte on bass)

Amputecture - The mars Volta (again, Juan on bass.)

Juan is the former bass palyer of shred band RacerX. ALthough TMV is nothing like RacerX.

Look into Concert DVDs too. Like Rush's R30. I bought it, very much worth it. I also have a SRV, which is great. Vai Live at the Astoria (in London), worth it for Sheehan. There are so many good DVDs.
