'Blizzard of Ozz' and 'Diary of a Madman' with Bob Daisley. (Only the original, not the remastered crap with scabs)

Echoing The Who's Live at Leeds.

If you are a rock bassist... this should be your bible.

Interesting choice Matt! I don't consider myself a rock bassist but I might still pick this one up! I've always thought of Moving Pictures as the rock bass bible!

Howzabout:

Money Jungle - Mingus plays way out, anchored by Max Roach and the master, Duke Elllington.

King Crimson - Red - John Wetton's lead bass lines are slinky and scary. Great stuff.

Oysterhead - Grand Pecking Order - Les Claypool's bass experiments smeared over Trey Anastasio's guitar textures and Stewart Copeland's percussive precision. Wild & Weird.

Black Sabbath - Sabotage & Vol. 4 - Geezer Rocks Out!

Rush - Presto / Grace Under Pressure / Counterparts - Geddy at the top of his game.

Pink Floyd - Animals - Waters' bass playing up front and perfectly complimenting the rest of the band on both melodic and rhythmic fronts. Epic.

Thanks, Rob
Try and hunt down "Ragin Full-On" from "fIREHOSE"... Mike Watt was a huge influence on me.

and I moved this to recordings to get you some more answers

Marcus Miller-The Ozell Tapes, one of my all time favs.
Billy Sheehan-Cosmic Troubadour, also any Mr. Big album.
Satriani-Cristal Planet has great basslines by Stu Hamm.

You should get every Marcus,Jaco,Stanley,Sheehan,Wooten etc. album you find indeed.

Some fusion albums not to be overlooked are the Gambale/Hamm/Smith trio records. Each one contains some fairly bombastic bass playing, and it's a real chance of pace for Stu. Very interesting, with some stunning arrangements. Plus, Frank and Steve really go at it too, resulting in some very passionate and powerful music.

for rock, Led Zep II is great for bass

Well... like the christian bible... it is very thick and contains many books... and naked people wear leaves over their junk.

OH YES! Graham Maby is awesome.

Their second album "I'm The Man" is also very good. They reformed in 2004 and released "Volume 4" - If you liked the first two, you'd probably like it too.

other recommendations:

Oteil and The Peacemakers
ANY album by The Who
"Freefall" by The Dixie Dregs
"Abbey Road" by...who was that?
