What is the term /

Hello fellow TB'ers. Never posted on recordings forum before.
My question : What is the musical term for the technique when elements from older song(s) are used a part of a new one e.g Janet Jackson "Someone To Call My Lover" which incorporates parts of "Ventura Highway" America and "Sometimes in Winter" ? (I think)... BS&T
Many Thanks

I call it quoting, unless a portion of the original recording is used, then its called sampling.

I think I read that chord progressions can't be copyrighted.

Plagiarism relates to words.

There are remix artists who do "mash-ups" using bits of different songs, maybe take the groove of one tune and put the vocal from a completely different song over it. Is that what you're thinking of?

Hmm, interesting. After having read about both, seems sampling is the process, mash-up the result ?
