So our band is recording our demo. I was running DI out of my SVT CL and micing the 8x10. Our drummer, who owns the home studio, didn't like the sound of the DI from the SVT. I suggested we try my Sansamp BDDI. At first he agreed, then insisted that he use his MXR bass DI +. He put it in the signal path from the guitar to the head It totally killed my tone and added distortion. Made the bass boomy with some pick noise and distortion. He totally cut the mids. The thing is, he didn't ask me what I thought at all, after I had spent over 30 mins working out a tone I liked. When I said I didn't like the tone he said it didn't matter, he would eq everything out in the end. I packed up my stuff and left.

All I gotta say is make sure you hear the demo before it's "finished". My vocalist mixed ours and by the time I heard it, he had already made all the discs. I hated how all the songs sound and now were stuck with ****** recordings until we rent a studio. If you're not happy with it, don't settle for it. If he's killing your sounds and your bassists as well, it's gonna sound like crap and you'll die a little inside every time you hear it.

Amen! Been there before, and it's not fun. I always mic my cab when I record. And if the producer (most of the time me, but if it's someone else), really insists on doing his thing, his way I make sure I record the cab on a separate track, so in case of screw ups or sh**ty sound, I still have the mic recording.

Mic the cab and run the bass direct using a QUALITY DI like the Radial JDI. Blend the two during mix down and you SHOULD have magic! NEVER EQ a direct signal before the board if your goal is a "direct signal". I'm not sure I would have been as polite as you were by just leaving. FUNK DAT! I would have blown up on him! Maybe offer to tune his kick drum or snare for him. It's the LEAST you could after all he's done to....I mean FOR you!

Sounds like he had the color button engaged on the MXR whicj can make it boomy and will cut the mids. The MXR is a great preamp/DI, I use mune every week, but like anything, if you try hard enough you can make it sound bad.
