What you think of the way we record?

Well, we didn't really plan to, but we recorded everything but the drums first...and we're doing the drums dead last.

We tab/write ALL of our music out on Guitar Pro with a metronome, and then when we record, we'll like start with the guitarist, and take the guitar tracks out of the MIDI from Guitar Pro. The guitarist will record his tracks listening to the MIDI part of the keyboard/drums/bass. Then I'll do my bass parts listening to keyboards/drums, then the keyboard will go, listening to all of our previously recorded tracks + the MIDI drum tracks. Lastly, the drummer plays listening to everything else. Theoretically it should all work out fine because the MIDI file saves the time of doing click tracks and scratch tracks...and it saves from people screwing up on scratch tracks. Does anyone else do this? It's extremely convienient.

I think you'll find that the majority will lay the rhythm section first but, if it's working for you, it's working for you.

It works. We used that approach with the drum machine/synth sequenced driven music of the 80s quite a bit.

Yeah, we're a progressive rock instrumental band with 5+ minute songs and really crazy time sigs and keys and obscure arrangements and stuff...and it's easy to forget small details.

Anyway is good if it works for you....

However, one time, this bible thumping no-mind came into our studio, and wanted to sing ALL her voice tracks acapella, and then have us add the music later...

Yea right!!!....and tune to you voice throughout the song...

This way, should be stayed away from!

My usual ways:

Metronome first...then you can do whatever next
or
Rhythm tracks first, then whatever feels right
or
Bassline with a metronome, then add to it

I like programming beats first, and jamming to it.

Sometimes my GTR player and me both jam to metronome, and then add to it

There is no right way or wrong way (except the one listed above) however the add music later is done in movies all the time, and almost always sound out of whack, out of tune, out of sync, or all three (awefull)
