What are your favorite bass entrances?

Sign in to disble this ad
I come from an orchestral background so let's not go there... too many!

On bass guitar, I have two at this monemt:

1. "Bridge Over Troubled Water", Joe Morgan. He EXPLODES into the final verse. (but then the tune finishes in a wash of over produced reverb IMO)

2."Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", Dee Murray. A GREAT ear grabbing gliss to the low "G".

Curiously, I think they're both Js.

What are your favs?

Bridge was Joe Osborn, but yes, he's great on it.
As for an entrance, Anthony Jackson, descending figure into the 2nd verse of "I Know You I Live You" by Chaka Khan.
Also, Where the Streets Have No Name, not just the bass entrance, but the way it all fits together. The bass is great on that tune though I think.
And of course, I always liked "You Can't Hurry Love," the real version, not Phil Collins. The way Jamerson comes in and also changes chords before everyone else is amazing.
Finally, speaking of Jamerson, My Girl. 2 notes, everyone knows what song it is.
Funny topic, I don't think I ever thought about this!

OOPS!

I must have been watching a baseball game when I wrote this thread. Joe OSBORN (!) is my favorite studio guy hands down.

"My Girl"...yes.

How about "Let it Be", John Lennon on the Fender VI. Another great moment.

As an orchestral player, you can sit for hundreds of measurers until you come in. The pieces or movements are longer than jazz/rock/pop so everything is more drawn out. The effect of a bass guitar waiting it out the right moment in a 5 min. tune can be stunning, especially if it's properly captured by the engineer.

what leaps to my mind for memorable bass to start a song? Dazed and Confused... How Many More Times (zep), Too Rolling Stoned (R. Trower)... Sweet Emotion... For the Love of Money...

And I think "Space Truckin'" was mostly organ...

Yeah, I'm showing my age.

Tire Me by Rage Against the Machine

To me, that's the epitome of Tim's raunchy jazz tone.

Edit: I just went back and listened to that track after I posted, and that's definitely one of my favorite Rage songs.

Right on both counts.

Also, a big nod to Tire Me.
