I've always admired the bass playing on this song, but I never figured out who played it or what gear they used. The playing and tone reminds me alot of Dee Murray, I get a jazz bass with flatwound strings vibe. I know it's not him though

IIRC, it's Klaus Voorman.

I guess you're probably not talking about the song "Adolescent Sex" by Japan (the chorus has the hook "Whatever gets you through the night (just keep on dancing)")

Voorman was the bass player in the "Plastic Ono Band" and played bass for a fair amount of the George Harrison and Ringo Starr solo stuff....mostly in the 70's.

He also was the artist who created the "Revolver" album cover for "The Beatles".
