What's everyones idea of a "good rock bass tone"?

Sign in to disble this ad
Reference a particular recording, producer or band who you think has good bass tone. Hope this thread turns out to be fun or informative. just to become aware of different tastes.

I listen to a lot of stuff but I like the bass tone on Sick of it all's built to last record. I think it has ideal amount of drive for hard rock, punk or metal. I lean towards this tone.

Converge's bass tone is great too. It's nasty good. I like how liberal the production is on the bass. It sounds more level with the guitar. Almost anything Kurt Ballou produces is along these lines. reference: Converge's "Axe to Fall" record

Steve Kile's tone on any of the Dead Meadow records.

Geddy Lee on Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures

and now for something completely different

A tone that I never hear referenced - Ross Vallory on Journeys 'Escape' (I know) but what a great tone - sounds like all bridge pup to me

Aside from the already mentioned Moving Pictures tone from Geddy Lee, I think that one of the biggest strenghts of Queensr˙che's "Operation: Mindcrime" is Eddie Jackson's superb bass tone. Also, I think that the bassist from this band has the best P-bass tone in a rock setting.

I'll refer folks to any of the tracks of the Raconteurs disc, "Consolers of the Lonely" - absolutely killer bass tones on that one.

I'll go with some hometown boys
Umpherey's McGee- Local Band Does OK
Great example of a lakland 55-94 in a rock setting, sounds like he sets it to Stingray mode.

Chris Squire; his classic Rickenbacker tone on any old Yes album, Mouradian on 90125, or Tobias on Big Generator for different but all excellent tones.

Geezer Butler - easiest examples would be song N.I.B. and it's intro Bassically, but he had great tone all over the old albums. Some good tones on Mob Rules and Dehumanizer also.

Jack Bruce - pretty much anything, but the overdriven bass on the live version of Sitting on Top of the World is completely awesome.

After I had been "playing" a couple years or so (mid-'70s)-
Porter was a guy who had a tone I tried to cop (his fingers' tone...I wasn't that big on the picked tone).

Before that (early '70s), John Paul Jones...after Porter (late '70s), it was Chuck Rainey & Will Lee. By that time, it was guys with a tone that worked in Rock, R&B, Soul, Pop, Jazz, etc.

Eddie Jackson on "Operation Mindcrime" and "Empire." Which is probably my favorite bass tone of all time.

Definitely. Any other type of tone just wouldn't work for that cd. Change it and the music loses all it's feeling.

Dont forget the importance of the mix. Alot of perceived bass tone has to do with how the producer sits it in the overall mix. That being said, I have some favorites:

Steve Harris - Iron Maiden
Chris Glenn - Michael Schenker Group (1981-84)
Stephan Ellis - Survivor (1981-?) Particularly the 1981 release: Premonition.
Roger Glover - Deep Purple, Rainbow
Ian Thain - Uriah Heep (1972-75)

And the aforementioned, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Terrence Butler, JPJ.

My favorite bass tone was on Deep Purple's "Live In Europe" album. Glenn Hughes used a Fender P and a Hiwatt. I also like John Wetton's bass tone who also used a Fender P through a Hiwatt. So a Fender P through a Hiwatt never fails which doesn't mean that there are other good combinations. I use a Fender Am Dlx J through an Ampeg V-4B and am satisfied.
