This may be a little new for this discussion, but the newest Coheed and Cambria (The Afterman) has some fantastic bass work. His lines move in and out of the guitars. Fantastic.

Time may tell if its a classic, but I can see myself listening for the bass lines time and time again.

Grassroots by 311. Really any of the early 311 albums have some pretty wicked bass lines going on.

I'm sure if I thought about it a little longer I'd come up with a different album, but there's something to be said for gut instinct (or kneejerk reactions) so I'll stick w/ that for now.

Interesting question. I'm going to limit my answer(s) to albums that aren't fronted by bass players; that is, I'm going to exclude anything by Victor Wooten, Michael Manring, etc. Those are great albums, but they are by and primarily for bass players.

One that comes to mind is "Other Voices" by Paul Young, which features Pino Palladino on bass. The track "Stop on By", featuring Chaka Khan on vocals, is a particular standout, but there is great bass work throughout.

+1 to EVERY Rush album I liked Counterparts, Power Windows, Permanent Waves, Signals especially.

Deadwing by Porcupine Tree. Some cool stuff on that.

Lots of prog has awesome bass on it. 'Tis why I love it.

There's so many great albums to choose from, with so much awesome bass playing, that it's indeed a difficult task. So I'm going to pick one out of left field. I like Andy Roarke's bass playing in The Smiths' album The Queen Is Dead.
