What's Your Favorite Stanley Clarke Song?

For me it's a 4-way tie between "School Days", "East River Drive, "I Wanna Play For You", and "Jerusalem" (Jerusalem is the best acoustic bass song, IMO).

I think that all of his songs are great but personally for me its between "School Days", "Come on" or a song by SMV (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten,) called Thunder.

School Days rocks.

School Days is my personal favorite.

BTW, I believe Stanley is playing down in Austin next week. I do not know the venue, but when I was down at Bass Emporium in Austin yesterday, they mentioned the concert.

"Silly Putty"

...with a multi-way tie for second: every other tune off of the Journey To Love album.

fwiw, to me, despite how ubiquitous and iconic "School Days" is, and despite how important in the history of bass guitar that tune & riff deservedly are, it is imho a throwaway of a composition. There's just not nearly as much music going on in either the tune "School Days" or even the entire School Days album, as there is in such Journey To Love stalwarts as "Song To John" or "Concerto For Jazz/Rock Orchestra"

...though I'll admit "Silly Putty" is just a rehash of "Lopsy-Lu". Face it, Stan was a brilliant bassist long before he became a good composer!

I agree...and also with the "Lospy Lu" connection (see below).

Plain & simple: "School Days" is a '70s bass anthem...add "Joe Frazier" & "Teen Town".

Heavy stuff there!

+2, and I'll add most of his self titled album from the year before.

Always was and always will be.."I wanna play for you" with "We Supply" running a very close second.

I still don't think he's all that strong a composer. Every few years he puts out a masterpiece, followed by absolute crap. He's even admitted that he's happy to mark time and put out anything in between projects where he tries to make a statement.

My favorite will always be "Hot Fun," though. I couldn't give a crap if he's not ripping badass bass throughout it...that's a funky-ass tune!

the opening bass on that song (i believe) is louis johnson playing a musicman. this sonic depth of that bass is astounding! i have this on vinyl (bought when first released) and the whole album is great. check out simon philips double bass work on underestimation. this album was meant to be played on a high end stereo system- remember those, still got mine!

oh, the name of the album. rocks, peebles and sand......

Similarities of "Lopsy Lu" & "Silly Putty"...
...maybe it's all those Open-Hammer Plucks?
