Where Country meets Jazz.... need stuff to hear

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, "Hot Country Pickin"

School me in the who, when, what and where....

I've known of the style and dug what 'little' I'd heard from the 80s on. Recent years I've become a fan of Vince Gill and Brad Paisley and their uses of the style.

Where did it start?
Who's Who in welding a Tele fast & clean with a touch of slap back?
Who created it?
Where did it grow from?

etc etc etc

Instrumental or Vocal is cool

cool list to start...

I know a couple names there. I'll start tracking them down.

I'm really curious as to the history of the genre. I've been googling myself in circles though.

Check out some Hot Apple Pie (with Keith Horn on bass).
Commercial tunes on there, but some cool "Con-Fusion" (Hey!! I made a new genre name!!! Con-Fusion!!!) on it as well.

Check out their version of "The Shape I'm In".
OMG....killin'

Oh yeah! They are on my list already... I may have to actually just order it online. Thanks for the reminder!

to repeat myself (my searching google is going no where)...
Where does that stuff come out of? I remember catching a local band or 2 in the 80s doing some blistering country stuff over complex jazz type progressions....

Who were the players players of the last 30 years or so?

A lot of Country players play Jazz after hours and occasional record it. I think it was Buddy Emmons the great pedal steel player who did a Jazz record. You ain't heard nuthin' till you have heard Charlie Parker Bebop on a pedal steel. Glen Campbell was a hot Jazz player if you ever see a record call Dylan Jazz Glen and bunch of the LA studio cats of the day played some hot licks on that. Then guys like Cornell Dupree legendary R&B guitarist talks about where he came up with some his really slick rhythm licks and he'll from listening to Country players. Then Wynnoa Judd check her CD's out an you see Steve Cropper and some of the Memphis cats playing.

Then don't forget Country Funk the great Willie Weeks is king of bass down there. Then J.D. Blair the Groove Regulator plays drums for Shaina Twain. A lot of the studio players seem to migrate to Nashville later in their careers. There are some great players in Nashville laying it down.

Country may sound simple, but it's all about good playing.

Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West, the dynamic duo of the Country/Jazz hybrid! They wrote the book on this whole deal.

James,

I am not trying to hijack the thread...........but thanks for all of the info you posted about the KT88's. I put them in my ailing DB728........the amp sounds killer.

On topic.....I play with a guitar player who can do the chicken picken stuff.......its cool. That style has to be one of my favs when it comes to guitar. The Johnny Highland stuff is cool. The album I have was co-produced by Steve Vai. Needless to say there are some Vai like tunes on there. Highland is an amazing player. He's blind to boot. Just thought I would throw that in. It really makes you appreaciate the level that guy is on when you realize he is playing like that blind.
