Who fills the shoes of James Brown these days?

Sign in to disble this ad
Are there any artists today that have the same soul as James Brown? I was listening to James on the way home from work and it was just... just... amazing.

How can I describe it?

Lo-fi, hypnotic, soulful, organic, funky, dirty, nasty, gritty, groovin'...

Who on the scene has that vibe going on today?

Joe

Nobody. No one even came close when he was alive and that hasn't changed since his death.

Yep. I imagine that the act of stealin tricks out of his 'bag' and making millions off of it will continue for a LONG time however.

I just saw an ad(in the Metro Times) for a Bootsy Collins show coming to town as a "Godfather of soul tribute". Interesting, NO?

He might as well. He did give a mighty assist to the funk.

If he went old school on it... maybe.

Maybe. Bootsy didn't exactly stay in the "Sex Machine" vein, he went in another direction. But back then he did know what the funk was about.

This subject came up locally last week. JB's last drummer is a local cat and we were wondering what his band was doing now.

pass the peas

Alright, guys... the funk is still out there. JB's former sideman on the alto sax, Maceo Parker- is one funky cat. If you want to hear one of the few keeping the old-school funk alive, check out his music. http://www.maceo.com/
Some newer hip-hop sounding stuff on his latest albums also.
peace

Daptone records has some really nice modern funk , r&b, and soul stuff. Lee Fields and Charles Bradley look alot like James and sing great. Lee Fields played at the Brown memorial concert @ the Apollo awhile back . Check them out.

The second disk on Maceo's new live CD has a happening version of Pass The Peas! Not quite JB, but sure flying the funk-flag high.

I did a gig in DC last weekend with six old school acts. Little Royal may be a little younger than JB and his performance had the same raw energy as an old JB show.

I had the opporunity to see JB three years in a row. The Seven Decades of Funk World Tour was my favorite. JB is THE reason i love the funk. My dad loved his music and it just filtered down to me. His music has opened up door after door for me to find new groups andmusicians that make music that makes me smile and dance.

JB is the often imitated but NEVER duplicated. He is missed.

Even though I think nobody can fill the place of JB, some of the old JB's are close (MACEO, FRED WESLEY....)
and i also think about PRINCE when he's funking (he sounds oldschool when he does pure funk ) of course he's not as powerfull as JB but he has energy

I am gonna have to agree with blac.rose. Prince would have to be the closest thing to a JB of today.
