when it comes to stank nasty funk..we all miss james. but some other down low funkateers would be the meters, of course bootsy and/or george clinton, sly and the family stone..

but none of them have the same soul as james. theyre all differnt; but more importantly they're all some seriously funky cats.

No comparison to JB but I really like All Mighty Senators out of Baltimore. Landis Expandis and the lads put on a great show with a deep catalog of groovy tunes with the ingredient that's often missing: entertainment.

I'll agree with everyone who's mentioned the fact that there is still some soul out there, just nothing compared to the likes of James Brown. I keep mentioning him, but Toots Hibbert has LOADS of soul...

James Brown though... a friend of mine once said to me that it seemed like James sung primarily about three things: taking your money, taking your woman, and kicking your ***. I have yet to hear anyone since James belt out tunes like those with as much intensity and conviction...

just my opinion.

JB was the man without question.

Prince is equal as far as being an entertainer. I've seen them both in concert, and they are both incredible. Different to a degree, but stellar!!

There is actually a lot of great funk/funky music out there right now. Maceo was mentioned, and he has some great stuff out. Here are some others worth checking out:

Nils Landgren
Soulive
Stanton Moore
Greyboy Allstars (Karl Denson & Robert Walter)
Robert Walter (one of my absolute favorite)
The New Mastersounds
The Daptone/Sharon Jones stuff
Medeski, Martin, and Wood have some great stuff
Karl Denson

I like Prince but you take Prince and JB in their prime... no contest. You'd get exhausted just watching James.

Nobody will get close to James Brown because James Brown WAS funk. There was never nobody that came close to grooving in the same dirty, raw, sexy way that James did, but a lot of people are still keeping that old-school vibe alive with a voice of their own.

It would be like someone filling Chuck Berry's or Lemmy's shoes. Won't happen.

Yeah, me too. Plus he is a great guitarist and bass player.

I did say as an entertainer. Prince isn't as physical as James, but nobody since JB has commanded a band like Prince does. Watching him in concert is enough to make your head explode!

Thumbs up James Brown on the TAMI Show

FYI-
There's a DVD of a 60's movie called the TAMI show. Lots of teen acts including the Rolling Stones. James Brown comes out with Out Sight, Prisoner of Love and finally burns down the house with a version of Please Please Please that won't quit.
There are snips of it on YouTube. If you can find the DVD, get it.
Legend is that the Stones initially refused to come out after JB was done. Can't blame 'em.
No one can replace James Brown.

And where do you think Prince got that from?

They called James Brown the hardest working man in show business for a reason. In his prime you didn't want to follow him. I'd bet that Prince would agree

James Brown didn't use props or stop dancing to do something else. He's as close to perpetual motion as most of us will ever come. "I" became a two syllable word. Prince wishes he could scream like JB. There can be only one.

Nobody does. I think there is only one James Brown, and if there was another person like James Brown they would pretty much be irrelevant because:
a)james brown was so good because of how original he was
b)times have changed, funk is different.
