Who Hates This?

Okay, that title is a provocative joke of sorts. It seems that there's been so much bashing on TB. I recently did a thread that got taken so out of context it became comical.

So here, now, is something completely different.

No it IS NOT surf music!

It's an arrangement of a song from West Side Story in which I did the orchestration. I also sing the male and female parts. Go to the first track -- One Hand, One Heart. http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/nelsonmontana

I know this is the furthest thing from a TB post. And that's intentional.

Fire away.

I hate. Add me please.

Oh, wait, hold on. If the forum is going to go where it usually goes when prompted for personal opinions, (which is you have to like whatever the presenter presents, like a 3rd grade talent show, or me regarded as a <gasp> hater)

Then mark me down as LOVED it.

If it was a joke, you nailed it
If it was serious, you failed it.

Awesome. Any reason? The orchestration wasn't the way you would have done it? Just hated it, right? Cool. Thanks.

Well for one, it didn't sound good when it hit my ears...that's a biggie.

This would have been a smash hit in the summer of '61....1561 that is. This would have got you more Middle Age snatch than cure for the Black Death.

When you start singing in a round, I was wishing it was a .357 round...right here behind the right eye.

It was vastly too dramatic. It had not sticking point.

Other than that, Grammy.

I liked the orchestration, very genre-appropriate. I think that doing music in wildly different genres can open your ears to a lot of different composition and arrangement techniques.

Ah , I see. Anything old sucks, right? Yeah. Well this was meant to be a choral piece and it was written by Leonard Bernstein. He's real old so he really sucks.

You make a cogent point my friend. Thank you so much.

Thanks bro, and I agree -- studying different types of arrangement and orchestration really opens up one's sense of melody.

No. Just your version.

Exhibit A on everybody has to love what anybody else puts out on here.

Here's a tip that will bandage that leaky little heart of yours:
Don't ask people's opinion if you only want the good. It could get scary out here...

You're confused my man. No leaky heart. Not scared. Not looking only for good. I just find it amusing when someone just blatantly dismisses something for no other reason than they don't understand it. I was EXPECTING it!

Now if you sounded like you knew what you were talking about and didn't like it, THAT would sting a little. But...no such problem.

Thanks for the input.

I don't dislike the tune but really hate the recording. The VST sounds are terrible and the overprocessed vocals sound dated.
I think this would have been ok without the processing and the backing track and 1 real instrument.
Just my 2c

Not sure what was processed. That's a vocal straight in with a little reverb. Not sure what's dated about that.

There is no backing track. I played all the parts.

I'm not dismissing what your're saying -- just trying to understand it.

+1 to all of that. I would add that the singing is, umm, not wonderful. OK arrangement, but really hard to listen to, sorry. Hate it.

I don't hate it but I don't think it's your best work. Seems to be missing something.

The vocal sounds compressed and thin this maybe due to your mic/interface/ or standard effects employed

I didn't mean it was a backing track just that the VST instruments you have used sound just that - like synthetic instruments.

I think your voice / this tune would have worked better with a more natural feel and authentic instruments.
