Oh, well. Would have loved to see some better clips, though. |
No, directors avoided filming him because Moon was thrashing about, Daltrey was swinging his microphone around, and Townshend was windmilling and jumping high in the air, knocking into his amps, hitting his guitar into his amps, etc. Only the videos that were shot specifically by The Who for The Kids Are Alright seem to have much footage of The Ox. Houston '75, Cleveland '75, and Chicago '75 have some when he sings Boris, and the Dreaming From the Waist solo, and some footage of him playing French horn can be seen on Cow Palace '73. (The Cow Palace show is the one where Moon famously ate 8 horse tranquilizers and passed out. The less often told part of that story is that he didn't pass out until they had played all of Quadrophenia! He passed out during Won't Get Fooled Again, missing the drum solo, and passed out again during, I think Magic Bus. Prior to passing out, he nailed Quadrophenia! Which is saying something!) I think John just wasn't "interesting enough" for filmmakers. His wife told him to start wearing flashy clothes to get more attention, and you can definitely see that in his sequined jackets from Charlton '74 and the '75 shows. I would highly recommend getting Live at Kilburn '77, it was Moon's next to last show, and was filmed for The Kids Are Alright. The band hated their performance (even though it's pretty fantastic through most of it), and scrapped it, and set up another show for May '78 that proved to be Moon's last, and Baba O'Riley and WGFA in The Kids Are Alright come from that session. The bonus dvd on Kilburn is their December 1969 London Coliseum show, featuring the super rare Happy Jack and most of the Leeds material, but with poorly lit footage, and missing footage at times, but the sound is good, and it's Tommy-era Who!
