The Who - Live at Leeds

Sign in to disble this ad
Just recieved my deluxe version of Live at Leeds. 2 CDs. One has their original performance (along with some extra talking not on the "normal" version) and the other has the full version of Tommy. (minus a few songs they never did live)

So... Yea... How about that Who?..

Oh yea, I just saw them live at the Palace last weekend. Great show, but it should have been longer for the price.

Ah, Live at Leeds. I wore out at least two vinyl copies over the years. Ain't digital remastering a wonderful thing?

It's one of my absolutely favorite live recordings. Right up there with Deep Purple "Made in Japan" and the Janis Joplin recordings from Monterey.

Believe it or not, Keith, there used to be a lot of "recorded live" albums in the old vinyl days. Some were fantastic, others really sucked.

Congrats on seeing The Who live - well, half of them are still alive, anyway. I feel fortunate to have seen them once before Keith died and several more times before John died.

Kenny Jones and Pino Palladino are good, but just not the same. I'm just glad Pete and Roger make an effort to keep it going.

Oops, if you just saw them recently, I bet Zak Starkey was playing drums, not Kenny Jones.

Kenny Jones was really good for The Who for the time he was there though.

Live At Leeds is nice. The original 6 song version is IMO superior to any "deluxe" expanded editions that have come along since. It loses a lot of the edge that it had.

Yea. Pino was tearing it up, but I would have loved to see John up there. You know what's funny? He took the bass that Fender recreated (the $3000.00 relic) and didn't touch it once. He was playing a Jaguar the whole time.

Vinyls have a nice "aura" to them. I recently sat down with some records I found in my attic. Audiophiles be damned!

Live at Leeds rules. I too have the dlx version. Love all that extra stuff. The bass tone is awesome.

I'm thinking Pino's p-bass might have been the real deal, the actual bass they modeled the custom shop one after. But yeah, funny he's playing the Jag. But jazz style basses sound best through Ashdown rigs (if he's still using the Ashdown rig). They enginered the amps using a jazz bass. I like that he chooses the $600? bass, goes to show that the affordable gear can have mojo too.

Long live rock.

what irks me about the deluxe expanded LAL is the booklet- it's so thick that you can't get it out of the case without damaging it.

I did a lot of time with the original Live At Leeds back in my youth. One of the great live albums......when they really were live albums.

I SAW THE WHO IN ONE OF THEIR FIRST IF NOT THEIR FIRST USA CONCERT. IT WAS AT THE SAN JOSE (CA) CIVIC AUDITORIUM SOMETIME AROUND 1967??? THE PLACE WAS 1/2 EMPTY AND THE GUY WHO LATER BUILT MY CUSTOM SPEAKERS GOT ME A PASS FOR 40 PEOPLE I WAS ONLY ABLE TO GET ABOUT 4 OR 5 PEOPLE TO GO. WHAT A SHOW!!! THE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF GEAR BACK THEN AND THEY BROKE IT ALL! TOWNSEND'S GUITAR AND A FEW DRUMS WERE LAUNCHED INTO THE CROWD. FROM THAT SAME GUY THAT GAVE ME THE TICKETS I GOT THE GIG OF MY LIFETIME IN 1969, THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY ROCK FESTIVAL RIGHT AFTER WOODSTOCK YOU MIGHT HAVE READ ABOUT IT 3 DAYS OF THE GREATEST BANDS. I WAS THE STAGE MANAGER OF THAT CONCERT. THE HELLS ANGELS TOOK OVER THE STAGE AND THE REAR STAGE DOCK AREA. THEY HELD THE CONCERT UP FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND THE SHERIFFS WERE TO CHICKRN **** TO DO ANYTHING....WHAT A CONCERT ...WHAT MEMORIES AND I'M STILL BANGING ON THE BASS!

I've bought this album more than any other. I never had the original vinyl with fold-out cover and goodies. However I wore out the non-fold out vinyl, and then the box set CD version with all the goodies that came with the fold-out vinyl. Then I bought the expanded 1CD version, and finally the 2CD deluxe version with "Tommy".

I agree that the original is the best "album" from the average listener's standpoint, but Who/Entwistle fans like me are delighted to have the expanded versions.

It's still the greatest rock live album ever (IMHO, of course).

P.S. On this album, bass is panned full left and guitar full right. It's a blast to pan left to hear Ox in all his glory.
