I'm talking about Dusty Springfield's studio version - from '68 I think.

Who's playin' the bass? Drums?

Ths song's got a great feel from the bassist and drummer. UK guys I'm guessing.

That's from the "Dusty In Memphis" album which is a classic and well - worth owning. She basically went to Muscle Shoals to copy Aretha Franklin's sound- very gritty R&B, but by the time she got there, the band was really getting into lusher arrangements- almost a precurser to the Philly soul arranging style that Gamble and Huff would soon make popular. Anyway, you should get that album. I believe Joss Stone may have a copy she could lend you.

It's kind of surprising that for all the hits that he played on, Tommy Cogbill is not honored with an article in Wikipedia.

Maybe one of the more learned members of this forum (who has lots of spare time!) could whip one up for the rest of us to read and enjoy !

Tommy Cogbill and Paul McCartney both were 'missing links' in bass evolution. Both were (former) guitar players who ended up laying down some incredibly melodic bass parts.

Thank you for asking, I have wondered who that was too. I've heard that intro sampled and recycled, what a slinky feel!
