who played on the theme from shaft? barkays or wrecking crew

Sign in to disble this ad
so, i always thought it was the barkays. saw it on some vh1 documentary a million years ago. i could have sworn there was some footage of them playing it in the studio too. anyway, i ask because my boss was a student of howard roberts and is always quick to say howard played the intro to shaft.

i start some internet geeking and im seeing my original thoughts confirmed....barkays. but then i see this article
http://www.americanheritage.com/ente...-russell.shtml

its an article on the wrecking crew where carol kaye says they recorded the theme from shaft?!?! thoughts?

It says right in the opening credit of the movie: Theme by Isaac Hayes and performed by the Bar-Kays. Or something like that. But it contains the words "Isaac Hayes" and "Bar-Kays"

OMG...the Wrecking Crew doing "Shaft"?
Somehow this should have been incorporated into that Super Bowl "LMAO" TV commercial.

C'mon...

There is indeed some footage from the sessions, which you can see part of as a bonus feature on the DVD of Shaft (the original, duh).

The dudes don't really look like the wrecking crew

Original credits show James Alexander on bass for the theme.

It was recorded at and released on Stax Records, which was Hayes' and the Bar-Kays home turf.

That article is full of c$%p - I'm not going to say where it must have got its source information, but I think we all can follow the trail back...

As mentioned above, that "Shaft" stuff was under the auspices of Stax Records, which had the business relationship with Isaac and the Bar-Kays.

I have a idea - like the Motown stuff that Carol Kaye claims to have played on, the Wrecking Crew probably did do some versions of the "Shaft" music. When the final call was made as to which version would make the cut, the Bar-Kays version was chosen.

As much as I respect and enjoy the work of Ms. Kaye and the Wrecking Crew overall, I don't think they could properly cop the feel and vibe that makes a big part of the "Shaft" soundtrack so great.

yeah, i didnt buy any of it either, but apparently howard roberts was claiming he did the famous guitar intro too. my boss studied with him as he was in the first graduating class at g.i.t. and thats the first thing he'll say about howard.-"best known for his wah wah intro on theme from shaft"......

Thumbs up

Here's an interview with Hayes from a few years back. According to him, he got on his knees and worked the wah wah pedal for Skip Pitts. Too funny. I remember James Alexander played bass on it from way back.

The work James Alexander did with Stax is up there with Duck Dunn's and and all the other greats that pioneered soul & funk bass playing. He should get way more recognition than he does.

Hayes is the best.

The track 'No Name Bar' has killer groove and killer production
