Who Are You Favorite Music Critics?

Reading a local "News, Arts, Entertainment and People" newspaper's 30th year edition (LA Weekly) and was struck by the movie critics (John Powers and Michael Ventura) who have attained nationwide success beyond the weekly rag.

It got me to thinking about where are the musical critics these days. Long time since Leonard Feather has written something (he's dead) and Robert Hilburn, waning Los Angeles Times critic, isn't even mentioned in Wiki's American Music critics. I haven't read "Rolling Stone" in years and when last viewed, it was a vehicle for the record labels and rock posers.

Was Frank Zappa right about the genre, paraphrasing here "Music critics are people who can't write who interview people who can't talk". Who do you read about music or is this trade deader than disco?

All I know is Pitchfork Media's review of Radiohead's Kid A made me wonder what in the name of God were they thinking?

Allmusic usually has pretty fair reviews. And a really easy-to-use site as well.

Although I often disagree with his opinions, Martin Popoff writes some fairly entertaining articles. He is really knowledgeable about music (he specializes in rock and metal), but like many critics, he tends to be biased and less critical of some of his favorite bands.

I usually look to several opinions before checking out an album, and these days with this wonderful tool called the internet, artists often preview albums for free anyways, so critics aren't as important to me now as they were 5 or more years ago. Still interesting to read other's opinions.
