Question The whole band tunes down an octave from standard pitch?

Sign in to disble this ad
I read somethig over the weekend about a band that supposedly tunes down an octave from standard pitch? Could have sworn their name began with 'M' but I'm not sure. I wanted to look on YouTube and see what it sounded like but couldn't remember their name.

Any ideas?

Maybe their name is Mud 'cuz that's what it's going to sound like.

Just kidding! I know that wasn't helpful. Couldn't help it..

Meshuggah?

I don't think they tune an octave down but they tune their 8 string guitars pretty low.

Meshuggah almost tunes a full octave down. Their guitars have 2 extra low strings, down tuned half step I think. So lowest string on the guitars would be F

Ya, they tune somewhere in that range. Whatever they tune to, they sure know how to play.

F#, Actually, or the second fret on a bass' E string.

Meshuggah is a very fitting name for them.

I'm the OP. Meshuggah might be who I read about but I'm not sure. I don't remember where I originally read the info, but I do remember it mentioned tuning down an octave and not anything about 8 string guitars. But maybe the person who wrote it didn't know, so who knows?

I checked out a few Meshuggah clips on YouTube.... they're definitely LOW, but I didn't care much for the sound of the bass guitar. If anyone knows of any good clips of theirs go ahead and post the links.

Technically not really a Meshuggah clip, but ridiculously good anyway.

if they tune down that low, I think the guitarists should just play 15 string basses

The bass player actually tunes up a half step (they all play in F tuning) so they're all in unison, or so I've heard.

I heard they started out an all bass band, but it ended up sounding too muddy.

I'm surprised of the clarity of their music consider how low they tune.

I'm going to stick my neck out, too. IMO this was totally unremarkable and only vaguely musical.

But, to each his own...

+2

they're out making money, and such, so i'm not really in a position to say that their approach hasn't gotten them somewhere

Maybe i'll start playing my bass with my feet.

I'm with you... I don't get it. This just shows the extreme subjectivity of music.
