Who's Next - bonus live tracks

Does anybody know what bass Mr E was playing on these tracks?

I refer to the 1995 remaster edition, the tracks in question are 'Naked Eye', and 'Water'.

I'm pretty sure he used a '64 Thunderbird around this time, however this doesn't sound like his usual Tbird tone to me - lots more top end, with heaps of twang and growl.

If it is the Tbird, I'm getting me some pickups from Mike Lull.

Weren't those from the Young Vic theatre? He was still using the Hiwatt rig which was more toppy souning than the Sunn rig he soon switched onto. It sounds like a T-Bird to me too.

He used both '64 and non-reverse models at that time. Here's a pic with a T-Bird and a Hiwatt rig from the Young Vic theatre:

I'm not too sure where they recorded but will double check. If they are Hiwatts that would certainly explain the extra treble goodness... come to think of it, the tone does sound a bit like Martin Turner's sound on 'Argus', and that was a Tbird. All the ones I've ever played have been very treble-shy... Mind you, I've only ever tried the modern teflon ones.

According to Martin "Argus" was recorded with a Rickenbacker 4001. I seriously doubt his memory.

The pictures in the CD booklet from the Lifehouse gig show the HiWatt rig and John playing a P-bass.

Knowing Entwistle, just listening to it will never give the full explanation of what he had. Visual proof will always been needed. Pure equipment pioneer.

I didn't think he started touring with Thunderbirds until Quadrophenia in 1973. Actually, his book says he used Frankenstein, the sunburst Precision, until that time, IIRC.

Yes it does but that pic I posted is also from Young Vic Theatre.

He did start to use T-Birds in 1971. Check out http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/equipm...ear-71-74.html

He always said he used Frankenstein on WGFA, but most of the album is definitely not a Precision. I think Baba O'Riley is Frankenstein too.
On the Classic Albums DVD you get to hear a bit of one of the bass tracks solo, sounds a lot like the Thunderbird.

Yes... Don't know what he was 'enjoying' when he said that!

The Rick was used on Pilgrimage. Argus is classic Tbird all the way.

Right, I borrowed my Dad's 'Ultimate Edition' with the complete Young Vic set. The two tracks I mentioned were indeed taken from this performance. I'm pretty sure now it's the Thunderbird. It's an amazing sound! The band actually sound pretty sloppy in some places, Keith in particular sounds hesitant on the 'newer' songs. Still, it's wonderful to be able to listen to it.

But yes, the booklet features a picture from the Lifehouse shows, and John is indeed playing Frankenstein! Must have been an early one, or perhaps the Thunderbird's skinny neck was giving him cramp.
