When it calls for it, sometimes a solo can be just as good if not better than grooving. And who says you can't groove while you solo? Throw all the rules out the window and just play your ass off, plain and simple...

It's kind of like an offensive lineman picking up a fumble and running a touchdown. Cool sometimes, but all the time? Viewership would would slip. Remember The Fridge? Only on the goal line my man. Sorry about the fragments. I'm an English teacher, on duty, as I type. SHHHHHHHH! Darn TB!!!

I love a good bass solo. Not the "everyone cuts out but me" type, but more the "play a lead over instrumental support" type.

I play them often.

I am not a victor wooten fan but do prefer him when he is playing rather than talking.

As to bass solos...
I like good ones and dislike bad ones, just like thos solos played on any instrument.

I've heard Vic ruin a good groove more than once by taking a solo....

He is right when you play in a bar, where people don't come to hear you but feel good vibes and have fun. But in a larger scene where they come to see you and have paid to hear some music and not just drink a beer or dance it's different, the groove can take a break and let the spirit fly for a moment out of time..

Most bassists I know haven't invested any time learning how to solo... Nthingnwrong with a tasty aolo now and then. Stay in the groove or not depending on the sit. In my scene staying in the groove makes sense most often.

What i never do is ... Slap...

I love bass solos (if they are good) more than on any other instrument. That's because I love bass. Those that can't hate and that's sad.

Hilarious. I use the "a bassist is like an offensive linemen" comparison all the time. I'm also a lifetime Bears fan and was 16 when the Fridge scored a TD in Superbowl XX. Anyway, I don't care for bass solos. It's fun to occasionally listen to Jeff Berlin or Victor Wooten solos. OK, and Alain Caron. But I really dig grooving bass parts over bass solo's any day. Just my preference.

Honestly, I don't like soloing all that much. But I never get tired of sitting on a simple groove or playing a tasty fill. I like bass solos..but they have got to be tasty.

Yeah, I'm like that too. When I'm in a tight groove with the drummer, it's like we're in a bubble with warm glow becuz I can feel the bass groove punch me in the chest. The drummer and bassist have to have a tight relationship to the point where you guys communicate without saying a word. All its needed is head nod or a certain glance and then the drummer acknowledges with a "Yeah, I know where you goin' with this groove". It's like that. I don't want screw that up with a solo.

Some bass players like bass solos. Do the general listening public though?
