If you can (I hope you can), go to a music store, and ask to try a compressor. It's something you have to experience. I always thought they were pretty pointless... I was wroooooonnnnggg.
Note, I play metal now (I use to play funky/jazzy/rock), so I don't use a compressor... I like the bigger more open sound of uncompressed bass for metal. So, I'd say, it depends on the genre... screw genres... the sound you want.
But I've heard compressed bass clips, it doesn't really seem like it does much, but if you try one out... you'll get it.
