The worst basslines ever....

Sign in to disble this ad
Always we are highlighting the best ones...Do you have any bass lines that you hate because the guy overplays or has a bad tone for the style, or plays less...etc..etc
It happens to me with some Flea lines, I`ve always thought scar tissue line was so full of notes

In general, even if a part isn't especially creative, in order to get on record, it has to be in tune and in time and that makes it alright.

I guess I would say Johnny Winter Live's version of "Johnny B Goode", where the bass player is playing the last verse in a different key is as bad as I've ever heard. But I'm sure that was the heroin talking.

"When I Come Around" by Green Day... all those relentless 'nerny-nerny' parts drive me up a wall. Everything about that song is terrible.

Nah, bad basslines don't bother me. However, a couple of very popular 60's tunes have change-outs which have induced psychotic reactions in your's truly. Don't try to clap along with either as you may suffer the same fate.

The madness begins at 1:15. John Philips was a perve, musical genius, and supposedly wrote this tune to punish Dennis (who was having an affair with Michelle).

Traditional song with a new twist. Just proves that mental illness and substance abuse can work to one's advantage. Bad bass line, too, but they get a pass from me. Pay attention at 2:22.

I don't hear a problem in either one of those songs.

WOW! ..... Slagging Pet Sounds? ..... I never heard anyone do that before. .... It's Carol Kaye, who's playing the root of the cord an octave down. (I hear the tune in Ab, but whether it was played in A and tuned down later, I don't know)..... But, if Brian said it was OK, I think it's a good choice of notes. ...... Nothing musical got past that man.

Only when the clunker is obvious(as in the Johnny Winter live mentioned) and the number of clunkers becomes very numerous.

Even a certain note in the fun-to-play "Thunder Island" by Jay Ferguson doesn't destroy the song(listen close at about 2:26~2:31 after he sings "a little bit deeper").

Tuning seems to bother me more as "pitch" got ground into us as children listening to my Mom and sister practicing classical piano a LOT.
Some Rolling Stones tunes and old 60's tunes with the bassist playing up high(when intonation was not so well kept)....the sour effect takes hold, almost like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Van Halen's "Runnin' With the Devil"
E... E... E... E... E... E... E... E...
Does more than just about any other song to further "bass is easy" stereotypes. Boring as hell.

Is it me or is the bass in the chorus sharp? (or flat, it just drives me nuts).

The rest of the song is fine, in tune and has nice bass. I just think they had a change of mind about the chorus and decided to over dub the straight 8ths -- but not quite in tune with the rest of the track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pulwa9s7Q_4

I would have played the same thing. That's what it needs.

Several of the Mike Mills (REM) basslines from the early years drive me nuts. Fine line from inventive to driving me nuts.
He gets a lot of the "underrated" votes and I agree but sometimes....

You've got a point, I'm just not a big fan of it.
