Wish my tone sucked bad enough to get arena gigs all over the world.

Amazing player, but Rancid's Matt Freeman has a tone that makes me wince. Generally speaking, Mark King or any of that slapping stuff with a lot of treble, the sound really seriously bums me out.

It seems that every bassist in my area is quite opposed to tone shaping. It's quite disturbing.

No love for Matt Freeman? I can respect your opinion, but I must disagree with it. I LOVE Freeman's tone, pure punk!

I can't really think of a bass player whose tone I consider 'awful'. There are some that stand out, like Peter Steele. All that processing and modulation, it's hard to tell it apart from the keys sometimes.

The worst I heard was a clip from Sweet playing live ... the bass player had all treble and no bass ... but he sounded good in the studio.

A close second is Greg Lake when he played the Gibson grabber bass live on tour in 1973 or 74 ... it was really harsh and unpleasant ... Greg lake is also good in the studio where he usually used a jazz bass.

and honorary mention goes to Gene Simmons from KISS mainly because he didn't care about his tone because he was to busy spitting blood and playing with fire ...

Does anybody remember American Head Charge? They were a band from Minneapolis that tried to catch the Nu-Metal wave in '99. Any way, I worked security at a festival they were playing at. The bass player had an Ibanez 6 string of some kind. At sound check he was picking it and it had this anemic, distorted, indistict sound. As soon as the the detuned 7 string guitars and drums came in, the dude just disappeared.

Big fan of Billy Sheehan, but the Live Niacin tracks? Why? I guess that distorto heavy honk doesn't record well? He got hands though!
