Its been almost 40 years since Led Zep got together and recorded that first album. They recorded it in the fall of 1968. I love most all of their catalog, but this one is tied with Physical Graffiti as my favorites.

Zep formed just in time to be considered by the Stones for that ill-fated Dec. '68 Rock And Roll Circus show, but they decided on Jethro Tull instead, also a brand new group at the time. Interesting show, but it would have been a bit better with Zeppelin I think. Or even better still with Tull AND Zeppelin.

You are making me feel old. I always chuckle about my transition from 'kiddy pop' music to the 'real thing' when I was in around 7th grade or so in the late 60's. I remember I loved Hermin's Hermit's when I was a kid, and had a couple of their albums. Then, as I hit about 7th grade and started to become aware of the 'underground' LP type music on the local radio station (KSHE 95 in St. Louis, which was quite 'underground' back then) I was turned on to Zep. So, I bought the first two albums and dug them, and had no idea of this link until recently. John Paul Jones actually produced quite a few Hermin's Hermit's albums before he joined the Zep... so I guess he was instrumental (pardon the pun) in both my 'bubble gum' and 'hard rock' era listening

Oh yeah, JPJ played bass and probably keyboards, and/or produced a lot of those 60's era pop acts, I think for Mickey Most. Page played tons of sessions too. The things these guys played on would surprise you. That's Page on the guitar on Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan. Pretty sure he played on some Kinks songs. I think he did some stuff for Lulu, maybe Dusty Springfield too. They actually had him do some Muzak tracks and he said that was the last straw, and went and joined the Yardbirds - on bass no less. Then Dreja switched to bass so Page could play guitar.

I was looking at a comprehensive list of probably every gig Zeppelin played. One of their first gigs in the States was a club in Iowa. Believe that? I wonder if that club is still in existence after 39 years.

Yeah, I can hear that in my head, and it sounds like Page. I think he played on some Tom Jones hits too.
