Simply put, what bassist do you think has the best tone?
I had to think about this one for a while. A bunch of people went though my head. Some of my finalists included Mike Dirnt, Jack Bruce, Duff McKagan, and Nikki Sixx.
My favorite tone OF ALL TIME, I think has to go to Krist Novoselic. A close second with Bootsy Collins (or Flea, but only on the BSSM album), being a HUGE traditional funk fan.
Also, Mods, move if needed

| | | | This is a tough one, considering tone always changes. I would say
Lemmy
Jason Newsted (91-94... 97-98 era)
Justin Chancelor(?) from Tool
I'd probably have to say Jason though.

| | Registered User | | | | | Jason Newsted, all the way. While you can't hear it on the album itself, his tone from AJFA that I have heard on tracks with boosted volume is the best distorted bass tone I have ever heard. His tone on the Black Album and Load are just as good, but with less distortion. |

So was the guitar tone, and the drum sound, and pretty much all the songs and the playing... Really everything but the singing, and if you've never heard them, none of this is making sense, but the singing was terrible, but at the same time it was such a signature part of their sound.
Yeah, that was a pretty run-on, stream of conscious type thought. Sorry. Check out that album, the bass sound is killer.

| | | Dan Briggs. So round and smooth. I'm pretty much a fanboy. I can't say enough about his influence on my playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZTE4jIxERU
Jump to 3:00 to really hear his signature awesome tone. He never changes it either. Pretty amazing that that same tone tone fits so well with everything they do. |
