You pick, I play

I'm really lacking direction and inspiration to study/play my bass. It's gotten to the point where it's the same X songs that I play and I know I lack the inspiration (blame partially on myself and my 'band' not showing up for practice and crap to the point where I don't think it's a band anymore, yay >.<). I came up with the idea of having the TB community pick a song or two for me to learn then I'll post it on youtube and have you guys critique me. Not only would this open my eyes and ears to new bands (possibly) but would also train my ears/hands/feel for the music.

I currently play a lot of progressive (rush, dream theater, floyd, tried learning YES but DAMN Squire has just an untouchable amount of feel) and classic rock. I'm too afraid of jazz and blues because I know I don't know my scales and modes well enough for that (so why don't I start there? Laziness I suppose). Point is, pick some songs that aren't insanely technical because I want to practice stuff.

You guys game?

Schism by Tool....finger,pick or slap no matter. It's not technical either. Pretty simple.

Oh yeah, one of the songs that got me hooked onto tool. This one wasn't bad but I'm trying to nail down 10,000 days. That one's brutal but it's forcing me to teach myself the 3-finger technique.

Holy crap, you can actually hear the bass in the mix. Definitely talented, I like it. I get a lot of floyd of them but hybrid it with... maybe a bit of zeppelin? I might learn this one...

They certainly have that 70s vibe going.

That dude is actually one of my bass heroes, haha. 'The Eclectic Measure' is a masterpiece of an album. But not all songs are straight-out rockers like this.

Too bad I'm no good at transcribing or learning stuff by ear or I would've learned their stuff.

Edit: Actually, the verse main riff is easy. Based on root, minor 7th, 4th and 5th. The rest... yeah, not so easy for me lol.

I'm game. I'll play. And will later watch. I'd say give this a shot- the studio version of this:

(for playing things in modulating keys)

Or this:

(some of the best music ISN'T in 4/4)

Or this:

(for timing)

Want to grow and not be bored? Play something different that you wouldn't normally consider playing which is also musically challenging, but reachable.

A few I've run across while searching for some new bands.

Many songs are tabbed on Songsterr if needed. Not terribly technical but the off beat keeps them interesting.
Good luck
