Younger Metal Heads, please lend me your ears...

Sign in to disble this ad
...and offer your unvarnished critique of the Free Keys, a progressive Metal band whose bassist is a Facebook acquaintance of mine.

I think his band is good (they compose in movements and write album cuts), but then I'm an old guy. I'd like some feedback from younger players as to what you like and/or don't like about the Free Keys' approach, and why.

Thank you.

(BTW. The track "Time's Spin 00" seems to be playing back at 2x speed. I've PM'd the band's bassist re this matter.)

EDIT: I just got the word. The 2x speed is intentional.

I'm digging it! If that story on their myspace is really true then they have my utmost respect also!

Yup. Arya and his band mates have had to put up with a lot of 'funny-mentalist' political BS when all they wanna do is play rock 'n' roll their own way 'til they earn a wider audience.

When I first learned of some of what the Free Keys have endured, I was reminded of the movie Swing Kids (the true story of teenage jazz fans who were persecuted in NAZI Germany in the late 1930's).

There's not much info here but it seems that rock fans in Syria aren't faring much better.

A Facebook group: SAVE THE SYRIAN ROCKERS!!!

I like it. Best wishes to them, they are taking more risks than most people will face for music.

These guys are really good. I hope that they can continue to make their music for as long as possible.

Their story reminds me of the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda.

Here's a group I just learned of named Questioner.

Their self-titled album offers expansive compositions in movements segueing between atmosphere and rage via the use of dynamics and sophisticated syncopation.

If you like album cut Metal then you may like Questioner's Questioner.

This is awesome! My parents are from Iran and moved to the states around the time the Shah was overthrown by the Islamic extremists so knowing how messed up the government is there, I have a ton of respect for these dudes. I hope they can make it out safe and do great things, best of luck.

I'm buds with these guys. They put on a great live show. They have a very beautiful full sound. If you are interested in other stuff they've done, they used to go by the name Isthmus when they were just a three piece.

I don't know why you are asking metal head's opinions. I don't think they are metal at all. I'm digging "Freaky", kinda Deftoneish.

You're right. If I could improve the thread title at this point I would.

My aim was to get feedback from TB'ers who are generally in the Free Keys' peer group: young rockers who too darn LOUD!!!

Now, get off my lawn!
