I love the groove on Peg, and "Josie" is what I hear when I think "doublestops"
"The Fez" from Royal Scam is pretty groovy too.

It may seem like a small detail, but then again I guess small details are what help make a lot of bass lines great. Not sure who to credit with the phrasing in that section - Becker (who I believe wrote the line) or Rainey. Anyway, a fantastic bass line that's fun to play. |

And the funniest thing of all is- that ended up being the track that Fagan and Becker kept... not to mention a classic SD track as well |

All great players.
They only used one bass player, though, with each "band" - CR.

I am impressed that Becker let someone else play the great bass lines he created, but not so impressed that he insisted on playing (terrible) lead guitar on the later recordings. The lines all sound like bass lines - a far cry from Skunk Baxter's and Elliot Randall's soaring creations.

| | | "Kid Charlemagne" & "Green Earrings" from The Royal Scam.
"Your Gold Teeth II" from Katy Lied.
"Peg" & "Josie" are no-brainers.

Maybe a basic idea was suggested or a bare bones example given by Becker/Fagen...IMO, Rainey did what he's great at: He took a germ of direction & then made & played them as his own.

| | | | My band covers Peg, Josie, pretzel logic, green earring and Daddy dont live in new york city no more. If it were my choice we would be doing your gold teeth pt.1 and kid charlemane as well. There is a local band called Steeling Dan that does a fine job with the Becker/Fagan catalog. |
