Your Favorite LP Cover Design?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, for those of you who are old enough to remember or cool enough to still have any of these in your collection:

What was your favorite LP 33 1/3 vinyl record album sleeve design? Which of the gatefolds, artwork, inserts, or other gimmicks stand out in your mind as the most creative?

Man, I miss those days. I can hardly read the tiny print on CD covers and liner notes of today.

A few of my favorites:

Electric Light Orchestra Out Of The Blue double LP (gatefold, punch out and assemble spaceship insert)

The Beatles White Album full-sized poster and four smaller headshots of each band member

The Raspberries (self-titled debut) scratch-and-sniff cover, you get one guess what it smelled like

Bonus Points if you still have any of the ones mentioned in this thread in your personal collection (I own a copy of all three of the above).

Good stuff. The artist for Yes is incredible. That King Crimson cover gets immediately stuck in your long-term memory. That Helmet cover is just, wow.

It's Roger Dean...he also did a couple of Uriah Heep covers (Demons & Wizards, The Magician's Birthday).
For Xmas, I got an album cover book by Roger Dean...looking at the covers in that book certainly brought back some memories.
A cool one is Blind Faith's debut. A young girl is supposed to be Eve-like...but holding a jet airplane/"technology" (not an apple).

edit: I know it's a young girl etc. album covers are art but are not exempt from the content rules. Thanks -Josh (Blisshead)

I wish I still had this on vinyl. Tons of pictures of the band on tour, a complete gear list, down to how many lights they used, where they played all their shows on that tour, and I think song lyrics as well.

Most of the artwork for Iron Maiden albums was done by Derek Riggs, who also did a lot of their poster artwork and such.

Clutch - Strange Cousins from the West had a really cool package and mini poster inside of it.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye. Pretty much all of the Mastodon albums have all had really awesome artwork in around and all over their albums. They are even cooler when in vinyl format.

Ahh, LP covers! Really there was nothing as good as getting a new LP and studying it during that first listen. The cover WAS part of the whole product. I even bought some just because of the cover, to find out what was inside. Who really looks at a CD cover anyways? But back to the subject matter, as mentioned earlier, Relayer, (or pretty much anything Roger Dean did for Yes) and In the Court of the Crimson King were two of my favs. I also loved this one, although the inside and back cover artwork were just as impressive.

supposedly it's clapton's daughter.....a different cover was sold here as the censorship crowd had more juice then....

..i remember a lot of frazetta and hipgnosis, covers and the reverence bestowed on some of the local hippy type dudes who had dropped enough acid to be deemed all- knowing enough to decipher the hidden meanings that were rumored to be on those covers.....reports of mccartney's demise proved to be premature.....

Unhappy hmm...

... any guesses as to how long it's going to take the thought police to tell you to remove the picture of that particular album cover JimK?

There are so many, but this one led me to the work of H.R. Giger
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery:

& this was sheer genius, the original was a 10 page or so wonderfully observed parody of a provincial English newspaper.

That's the Captain Beyond album cover.
On the original issue that picture was in 3D. Kind of like the Rolling Stones Satanic Majesties Request album.

One of my favorite Lp cover's was 16 and savaged by a British band called Silverhead. I still have it I wish I could post it. I think Answers. Com has a shot of it. It's a hoot.
Silverhead were actually pretty good. Especially live. The Lp isn't perfect but has some good rockers. Silverhead had Nigel Harrison, who later joined Blondie,on bass and Robbie Blunt on guitar, who played on Robert Plant 's solo stuff.
