As someone who's currently enjoying a P bass after not playing one for a long time, I'm also digging out recordings that show just how great one can sound in the right hands (i.e. not mine).
I'm listening to Jean Jacques Brunel with the Stranglers' on "Down in the Sewer" right now. Just fantastic buzzsaw P bass with roundwounds and a pick tone.
Okay - please suggest what else I should be listening to for some more Fender Precision classic goodness. Any genre or style of playing will do nicely.

Stretch "Why Did You Do It?" FANTASTIC TONE!!!
And even further...
Love Affair "Everlasting Love"
George Baker Selection "Little Green Bag"
I'm not actually certain what bass was used on any of these, but they sure sound like Precisions to me! It was practically compulsory to use one at the time. Any other old guys like me out there who can throw any light on any of these recordings?

If you like this, you can get their Greatest Hits album (named for this track) on Amazon and it's excellent stuff throughout.
Tell me what you think of the track AND the tone.

Great playing - simple, and locked. The tone is weird to me - maybe not an actual P...seems 'hollow' sounding. Not bad, but not like any P bass I've heard before.

Of all the basses I have, I can get WAY closer to that tone with the P than any of the others I have, especially the upper register stuff. But as you say, the recording does have that sort of "hollow" element lower down and that's exactly what I can't quite nail. I can get real close, but not quite spot on. Wonder what he was using?
