For Your Love - Yardbirds - 19th FRET!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

While being on Talkbass for many years, have never ventured over this way. I was looking for new songs to play on Songsterr, and found the tabs for For Your Love by the Yardbirds, and was astounded to realize that the break includes a little bass action up at the 19th fret! I don't know about all of you, but the thought of a 60s rock/pop tune with the bass that high in the register seems awfully 'out there' for the time. Pretty cool to play, and sounds great, but just...odd. Agree?

My band plays For Your Love and I always thought the bridge bass part was cool.

Not too surprising... the Yardbirds pushed the envelope, instrumentally. Their "rave-ups" led directly to Cream's collective improvisation. Paul Samwell-Smith was quite a good bassist, and later an interesting producer.
Of course, the guitarist on "For Your Love" is Eric Clapton. It was supposedly the last thing he recorded with them; he was disgusted by how commercial they were getting, and he left (or was dismissed) right after.

Basses have 20 frets or more since don't know when, so why wouldn' people use all of them?

@ giacomini: Agreed! However, back in the 60s, it seemed save for Entwistle of the Who, that the bass was primarily a rhythm instrument, and you didn't see many folks venturing much past the 7-8th frets. So, I just found it actually compelling that this was NOT the case for this song!

@Richland123: Cool? Definitely!

For all: I found it a bit hard to play, at first, then the logic of the fingering hit me, and it's pretty simple, now.
