Your Top Ten Albums Of 2013?
They don't have to be in any particular order if that's too hard to work out, but what are your favorite albums from 2013?
I always have difficulty with picking my favourites - I could do a top ten for every genre represented below - so in no particular order, here goes:
- Haim - Days Are Gone ('Don't Save Me') ...you can't hate these girls.
- Arcade Fire - Reflektor ('Reflektor' feat. David Bowie) ...The Suburbs is still a better album, IMO.
- Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit ('Liquid Spirit') ...check out the double bass on this one.
- Mavis Staples - One True Vine ('Every Step') ...Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) has done for Mavis Staples what Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash.
- Fat Freddy's Drop - Blackbird ('Clean The House')
- Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
- The Smith Street Band - Don't @#$% With Our Dreams ('Ducks Fly Together')
- Northlane - Singularity ...djenty prog-metal.
- Oneohtrix Point Never – R Plus Seven ('Zebra')
- Matthew E. White - Big Inner ('One Of These Days') ...this was release in 2012, but I only discovered it early this year, so I'm throwing it in.
Now, here's the rant. Reading through a few Top 10s, Kanye West's Yeezus seems to be making it in near the top of many lists. Personally, I think music websites like Pitchfork should be/will be embarrassed by the way they have been gushing over Kanye West over the last few years. The production on his last two albums has been mostly great, little heavy-handed at times, but pretty forward-thinking in moments. Putting aside the fact that he is a massive DB, Kanye's rapping is second-rate, at best - his technique is sloppy, and he brings nothing new to the genre in terms of flow etc. Although his themes can be interesting, the lyrics are heavy-handed (and plenty of better rappers have covered the same territory). If you removed Kanye's vocals from the albums, and replaced him with any number of contemporary rappers, you'd get a albums with top-notch production and excellent rapping. Even the Odd Future hipsters (e.g. Tyler The Creator) probably have a better vocal technique. So if I see another top 10 with Kanye in it - "just 'cos", it seems - I'll scream. Or sigh.
10?! I wish I could name 5, but with the album world so in decline we no longer get to enjoy what used to be a great influx of new music every other Tuesday. As for the creme de la creme of 2013, I can only think of one (off the top of my head):
Tonbruket - "Nubium Swimtrip"
Not a big fan of modern music:hmm:. Middle - aged grump :D
Bruno Mars - Treasure
Bruno Mars - Locked out of Heaven
The 1975 - Girls
I don't have 10, but there were a few that I really liked:
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
James Blake - Overgrown
Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady
Carbon Leaf - Ghost Dragon Attacks Castle
Sigur Ros - Kveikur
Hanson - Anthem
I don't have 10. I just have 1. That's all I need. :D
Badlands - Trampled Under Foot
Bloc Party - The Nextwave Sessions
I'm a huge fan of Cyriak on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/cyriak) and caught that he did a music video for the song "Ratchet". I watched the video and ended up loving the song, so I bought the EP on Amazon (I wish I could get it on CD; I hate MP3-only albums). I ended up loving every song on the EP...then I found out the band's on hiatus. C'est la vie.
Agreed on your Kanye sentiment.
Strangely enough, looking through my albums I found that a portion of the ones I wanted to pick were really 2012 releases. I had a harder time picking 10 from this year, so some of them don't really deserve a "TOP" slot, but rather a "purchase that I enjoyed slot" I'll mark the ones that deserve the "TOP" accolades with an asterisk, the rest are just decent spins to me. Mine, in no particular order...

*Arctic Monkeys - AM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN7gSMPQFss)

I only bought 8 albums that were released in 2013, instead finding myself buying older stuff, and a ton of singles from the 80s - 90s (stuff I wanted to learn or work on).
2013 Albums I bought:
Biffy Clyro Opposites -- Pretty Good
Vampire Weekend Modern Vampires of the City -- meh.
Daft Punk Random Access Memories -- Couple good tracks.
Alice in Chains The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here -- meh.
Franz Ferdinand Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action -- double meh.
Paul McCartney New -- Couple good tracks.
Morcheeba Head Up High -- just bought it last night/need more time w/ it
Childish Gambino Because the Internet -- Couple of good tracks
That being said...My top album of 2013 was actually released in 2011. What can I say, I was late to the party on this one:
Of Monsters and Men My Head is an Animal.
I've listened to this album more than anything else released in the past couple of years.
I haven't bought/listened to enough 2013 albums to make a top 10 list. Here are a few good ones, though:
Christian McBride & Inside Straight, People Music
Chick Corea, The Vigil
Wayne Shorter Quartet, Without a Net

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Oneohtrix point never
King champion Sound - different drummer
My Bloody Valentine - MBV
Kvelertak - Meir

That's all I got.
I can't come up with 10 but there are some releases this year that I enjoyed.
Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork
Serj Tankian - Love is Christ
Charles Bradley - Victim of Love
Black Sabbath - 13

I'm not sure I can come up with ten, but, in no particular order of 'bestness', here are the ones I do especially like that were released this year:
Nick Cave ~ Push the Sky Away
Throwing Muses ~ Purgatory/Paradise
NIN ~ Hesitation Marks
Tim Hecker ~ Virgins
David Bowie ~ The Next Day
Ben Goldeberg ~ Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues
~ Unfold Ordinary Mind (w/Nels Cline)
I have a number of other albums released this year that I have not yet gotten my hands on, so the list will change.
Ah, I totally forgot about the new Nick Cave album!
Good choices everyone.
I'm a music blogger so of course I have a top ten list. Did a top twenty this year in fact (plus 10 EP's), there was a lot of great music put out this year. And I'm sure I missed some.
#10 Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt
#9 Tape Deck Mountain - Sway
#8 Daughn Gibson - Me Moan
#7 Colin Cowan And the Elastic Stars - Fall Paths
#6 On An On - Give In

Sorry to say, I don't buy albums anymore. Spotify for $9.99 gives me more music that I can listen in this lifetime. Some of the album titles escape me, but some of my favorite the artists with new albums are:
1. Derrick Hodge "Live Today"
3. Fat Freddy's Drop
4. Linda Oh
5. Robert Glasper
6. Snarky Puppy
7. John Scofield "Uberjam Deux"
8. Dave Holland & Prism
9. Kneebody "The Line"
10. Miley Cyrus "Bangerz"
