Any genre you like.
Mine would still have to be Jaco on "Havona". Never fails to move me.

I really don't know if I can narrow it down, I'll come back later, or maybe I won't if I can't name a favorite haha.

I'm still going to stick with Jaco though, on "Havona".
And he only needed four strings.

Reason: Narrowing it to one song

Two guitars two basses two drums and Ornette.
The bassists were Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Albert McDowell.
Tacuma was playing his Steinberger and was just wanking with a thin, brittle sound.
I didn't know anything about McDowell and had never heard him before. He was playing a J bass.
He totally disassembled and reassembled the instrument. And destroyed the room. I wasn't playing bass at the time, but I remember thinking that I wasn't sure that anything further needed to be said on the bass after hearing that.
Ever since then, I've been waiting to have another Albert moment of that magnitude, but it has never come to pass. |

I caught Jaco in the late 70's with Weather Report (Wayne Shorter when he was in his late 50's and Zawinul on KB) and they were amazing. I remember watching him come out onto the stage, dressed in light cotton clothing, barefoot, just eager to tear it up, and he did.
I saw Jamerson backing up Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrill at the Coconut Grove in the late 60's. Marvin was slick and Tammy could sing, but Jamerson dug the trench and threw the band into the groove. He was light on his feet but could hammer away on the downbeats, and then put an amazing syncopated arpeggio on the turnaround 8th bar starting on the upbeat of three. Damn, he was good.
