You're The Man Pts. 1 & 2 (Marvin Gaye)

Just wanted to mention one of the most soulful funk bass tracks every recorded. I think it's 2 bassists, similar to what Marvin had going on "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". "You're The Man" is one of my top 3 ginchy, funky, intricate, no holds barred, improv tracks. If anyone wants a copy email me. Hhock full o'licks, but, one in particular always floors me. It comes right after one of the later verses "...can you take the guns from our sons...". The lick is at 4:34. It's just one of those snakey-slidey licks that kills.

So that was 2 basses on ICB. At one point I was thinking he was detuned to use open strings while doing fills and gave in to it was some supernatural bass playing. It's amazing in any event.
" I want you" floors me in the "funky spaces not played" dept.
I'd love a copy of that, I don't think I've heard it yet.Thanks.

That's exactly how I felt. Supernatural is a good word man. I'd read on soulfuldetroit.com that it was Bob Babbitt and some other guy whose name I can't recall - not JJ though.
What do you mean by "I Want You" flooring you?

The space between notes and how it grooves so hard w/ so few notes.
There are a few fills and when they happen I have to back up and hear them again. In that sense, it's the same thing I love about some of Pino's playing, like on Voodoo. It grooves so rubbery w/ lots of space for wiggle room, if that makes sense.

I was asking what song you meant. "I Want You"? Don't know it. You mean "I Want You Back"? I need to check out Pino's playing. Can you give me a short list? What band/album is "Voodoo" from?

it's called "I want you" by Marvin Gaye. Beautiful tune.
A great Pino choice is D'angelo's "voodoo". My favorite funk/soul record in some time. ?uestlove and Pino are on a bunch of it. It's a MUST have disc. He's a chameleon, he'll play beautiful pop fretless like on Paul Young or Don Henly records and then rubbery funk like on D'angelo or Erykah Badu discs. Start w/ voodoo and go from there, there's a bunch about him on tb.
Short list: Gary Numan/"I Assassin"-earliest Pino I know and serious bass Paul Young-2 discs- I think they're called "secret of association" and" no parlez" great fretless
He's on some new John Mayer stuff-
Vikter duplaix-international affairs v2.0- killer track "desperatly"
Can you send me that Marvin tune,I don't think I've heard it. Cheers,M
