I don't care if someone plays Jaco licks with a pick, slaps, taps, or plays with their feet; but that kid's playing is below par.
I'm tired of these 14 year old kids putting up videos of themselves destroying some great piece of music. Get away from the video camera and get into the shed and come back in a couple of years when you've got something to say.

so what?!?

I really don't get the pick hate among bassists. Some really great players choose the pick....

Chris Squire
John Entwistle
Paul McCartney
Steve Swallow

just to name a couple

Practicing is OK

Practicing in front of a video camera is not OK?

I have so many videos of me butchering Rush and Metallica songs. It's great to look back and say, "I'm so much better now" or "Wow, I still do that", etc

...you got me... Technically though, yes he is, as far as the left hand goes, he has it down. I guess I should've posted my own opinion with it. I'm not dissing pick players, I've been trying to use them myself for certain things. I just felt that Jaco licks don't seem right played with a pick, atleast in this particular case. I'm sure there are guys who can tear it up with a pick Jaco style, but the way this kid does it is just terrible.

+1 ..at least he's not playing a stupid blink-182 song, he's actually trying something quite challenging.

I dont see the problem, pretty alright from my point of view, sure its not the same tone as jaco used, but not many people want to cover a song identically, the best way to cover a song is to add your own colouration to it!

At least he's playing his bass instead of wasting his time on a message board talking about how other people suck and he could be doing better.

...oh wait.

and what about the Jaco tribute album recorded on an Upright Bass

SuperDuck: you are so right! I'd like the OP to post a youtube video of his own playing.... then we can rate that for him

yeh, he slaps the hell out of it - difference being the word i'd choose to describe it is "awesome" whereas i'd use the word "ABISMAL" in size infinate font to describe that kids playing

I'm at work, so I have no sound, but I've seen it before.

Guys, we're in a world of technology now. Kids are going to suck, and be damn proud of it.

Where would WE be as bass players if we didn't challenge ourselves?
