Anthony Wellington Clinic & Lessons @ Rocket Music Dec 17-18

We're excited to have Anthony Wellington coming into town to do an in-store clinic on Friday, December 17th. He'll be following that up with a day of private one-on-one lessons on Saturday the 18th.

The clinic will be $10/person if you pre-order your tickets (please do so, we'd like to get a pretty accurate headcount before the event), or $15/person at the door. For now, please PM me if you're interested in reserving a seat.

The private lessons on Saturday will be $80 for a one-hour session with Anthony, also here at Rocket Music. We'll also need to schedule those ahead of time, so please PM me if you'd like to reserve a session for yourself. I know I'll be getting in on one of those!!

More details to follow as we get them nailed down!

** EDIT
CLINIC TIME: 6:00-7:30PM
** /EDIT

Let's start with this one with Ant doing what he's probably best know for (bass player in the Victor Wooten Band... I love the irony of that).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqcd7CDWruI

Or listen to "Flex" off Vic's Palmystery CD... that's all Anthony...

Oh, this is a better one, Ant takes off about halfway through...

He's also the guy who came up with that paradiddle slap exercise you've been working on...

Be one hell of a Christmas present for a bassist.

Oh, and here's a killer look at the fretboard slap technique getting worked in with a whole bunch of other techniques...

And here's the "Modes of Rhythm" section of Vic's "Groove Workshop" video that I thought was too cool for school... I had to break it down and record myself doing it...

And you want me to bring my weaksauce stuff and show him how it's done, right?

I'd just as soon learn 1000 dirty limericks and dress in a clown suit. Cause if I play sumthin' in front of him, he'll surely be laffin' himself silly.

I'll keep workin' man. I'm up to turtle speed now. Maybe by December I'll be up to the pace of someone on Thorazine.

God Bless, Ray

Yep, Anthony is a ridiculously good player, and he's also a really great teacher. I probably mentioned when I first came back from BNC how he was the guy that most spoke to me as a teacher. You've got Victor on one extreme "selling snake oil" (Steve Bailey said it, not me!). Vic's thing is "it's in you already, you just need to figure out how to get it out", or "stop thinking, just play". Steve Bailey is at the other extreme, sort of a scale and fingering Nazi. He wants you to know the instrument up, down & all around, and he wants you to know all your scales and modes and what not.

Anthony is in between, maybe leaning a bit towards Bailey. His approach, at least to exercises, is very mathematical. He thinks like an engineer (IMO). He looks at his hand and sees four fingers, then he starts thinking how many different ways can he play 4 notes using one finger each. Next thing you know, he makes a chart:

1 2 3 4
1 2 4 3
1 3 2 4
1 3 4 2
1 4 2 3
etc.

Boom, there goes a month of your life trying to make all 24 finger permutations as natural and as fast as your usual fingerings.

So Anthony takes exercises to the nth degree by looking at them with an eye on all of the mathematical possibilities. That doesn't always result in the most musical of exercises, but it willl put you through your physical paces like nothing else.

And then he sits back and plays, and he can play as beautiful a bass solo as you can imagine. You'd have no idea that there's an engineer in that head when you hear him playing over some smooth jazz changes. Or he'll knock your block off with his slapping, dude has some serious stuff in that area.

I love this little bit of "snake oil". It's very non-technical, but I think it's spot-on. Ask yourself where you fall in the spectrum, and how are you going to get yourself into the next state?

Anthony is without question one of the best teachers (of any kind, not just music teachers) I've ever encountered - and I ran a training organization for a Fortune 500 company for about 5 years.
The man is a great player AND a brilliant teacher, which is why I study with him via Skype instead of with someone else locally.

How long have you been doing that, Jonathan? I knew it was a possibility, but I wasn't sure how that would work for me... sounds like you dig the experience?

And if you guys are enjoying these youtube clips from Victor's "Groove Workshop" video, then by all means... BUY THE VIDEO!

It's like 5-6 hours worth of incredible nuggets just like these clips. All very chill and relaxed, nothing super technical. This is not your typical music lesson, and it will change the way that you approach learning and playing. $29 is a steal for this kind of information.

And if you never get the chance to make it to a BNC yourself, this video covers much of the same territory. It's as close to going to camp as you can get without actually going.

Greg - been doing it for a few months (since sometime last year). Scheduling is the toughest part - he's a busy dude, as am I. But yeah, it's well worthwhile.

^^ Yeah, it's a great video for just about any level of player. Stone cold beginner? No sweat, you won't hear any words like Mixolydian that will just go over your head. Already kow your scales and modes? Good, now here are a bunch of new ways to turns those into MUSIC! Totally bada$$ player? Shoot, there's even tips on showmanship that show you how to force an audience to clap and get callbacks on gigs. Everyone has something to learn from this, I can't recommend it highly enough.

You know Greg... It might be cool if you started stocking video's like this and others that you know would be of benefit to us all. I for one would feel quite comfortable with Rocket Music becoming a one stop shop for all things bass.. Know what I mean??

+1000

I'm all "ready" to learn all this new (to me) stuff and I can't drop $ with Greg @ Rocket. You mean I gotta go somewhere else?

Books, Vids, stuff like that would be great.

Here's a novel Idea; You could write books, vids, and stuff like that Get together with Cam and Danny (for guitars), minimal costs, and the rest profits.

I don't have a lot of dough (yet) and Rocket would get more of what I do have if they would sell such things.

Jus' Sayin'
