P.S. Between the shades and the hat, the look only spells one thing: b-a-d-a-s-s. |

That's a smaller "if" this week than it was last week, but I'm feeling confident. Especially since I don't have to also play bass, I can fix problems on the fly tonight...
I'll let Steve and Danny dictate how much or how little audio I share, though. Not my band!! |

Need to get down to the shop more often. We had a good crowd and hopefully we'll sound good. Last night I played through my LMII with a sansamp BDDI and into an older Epifani PS112 and a Schroeder 115L, oddly these two cabs really compliment each other. My bass was a Jerry Jones longhorn, almost always get comments on that baby, with flatwounds and played with a pick most of the night. Go ahead and post what you want, as far as I am concerned, and let's hear what everyone thinks. Now after 4hours sleep I'm off to play a Va Tech tailgait with our blues band. Blues at 9am, is nothing sacred. Steve. |

Definitely a real cool gig! The bass just never stops grooving! |

Great grooves all night long, and the interplay between Bob on lap steel and Danny on his Gretsch was just fun to watch. Ya'll put on a mean, tight show. The Woodshed could stand to learn a thing or two in that regard, fer sher. |

That mic placement looks a little iffy, seems to be pointed at the baffle board rather than the woofer... good thing we captured the direct signal, too! |

Man, I've got to say I'm very impressed with 3 Minute's ability to police their own individual stage volumes. With the Woodshed, I usually have to go in and slice-and-dice tracks to bring leads up here, rhythm guitar down there, etc. I think that stems from the fact that the Woodshed has always been a big PA kind of band, we're probably too used to counting on a sound guy to help us out. 3 Minute is a little more garage, all they run through the PA is vocals. Their stage volume is the room volume for all of the instrumentation. And that really shows in the recordings, this was much, much easier to mix than I anticipated.
I only captured partial drums on the first 7 songs last night. There was a routing problem in the board that took me a little bit of time to find. Sadly, with 3 Minute Lovin' (whose songs tend be roughly 3 minutes in duration, get it?!?), if you snooze for 15 minutes you miss a BUNCH of songs. The upside was I didn't have to worry about playing bass, so I was able to fix it on the fly. And Steve VERY ably handled the bass duties, I'm really enjoying the swing that he and Richard laid down for the front line guys.
So without further ado, here's the first tune that I captured fully last night! The monstrously musical Bob Chew is on lap steel and lead vox. "Walking After Midnight" (Patsy Cline classic written by Alan Block and Donn Hecht)
Only another 30-35 tunes to go!

I ended up using mostly the direct tone because it's extra bite cuts through the mix better. I did use the mic'd signal to fatten up the direct signal a bit, so I set it about 4 dB lower than the direct signal. Both come at ya at 10% left off axis in the stereo field.
The direct signal was captured from the head (which also had a Sansamp unit in front of it). "Walking After Midnight (Direct Bass Tone)" "Walking After Midnight (Mic'd Bass Tone)" |

I'm "re-amping" Lee's acoustic guitar each time which takes all of 5 minutes to do. Then I normalize all the levels, adjust the gates & compressors as needed, and boom! Master! 20-30 minutes per tune.
Here's the next one: "Six Blade Knife" (Dire Straits)
Doesn't that acoustic guitar sound pretty good? We ran it direct, and it's not so hot straight off the board. I decided to run it through an outboard Fishman Aura pedal that sweetens it up a bit. And, man, Lee Worley's voice is so great for rock-n-roll...

Bob Chew (did I mention he's monstrously musical yet?) plays lap steel for the first half. Then while Danny takes a turn on his Gretsch, Bob switches to his Baritone guitar and then proceeds to go hog wild with it on his next turn. I refuse to believe that anyone can hear his Bari solo @ 2:15 and not get a huge grin on their face. Put your sh*t-kickers on for this one, fellas, it's a foot stomper!! "The Race Is On" ( Sawyer Brown George Jones)
