Electric Woodshed @ Summer Soltice Fest 6/23/12

Danny and I will be playing with Electric Woodshed tomorrow afternoon at Blacksburg's Summer Solstice Fest 4:45-6:15 PM.

We're in between the dog parade and something called Animal Antics.

Reminds me of this:

Might be time to break out that Jazz Odyssey I've been working on...

LOL. Yeah, right. You know the drill with these town festivals, Steve! I'm looking forward to Steppin' Out later this summer, too, although we got a late afternoon slot that I'm not super excited about. Half the fun of Steppin' Out for me is playing at night to a packed downtown...

Anyway, I'm all packed up for today's gig. As much crap as I take, it actually won't be too bad to move today. We'll be playing on a stage setup right on the street, so I can just roll this entire pile of stuff the 1-2 blocks from our Draper Rd store to the stage. It doesn't get much easier than that, even if the cab does weigh 90-100 lbs.

Here's what made the cut today:
- Roscoe Century Signature V fretted
- Roscoe Century Signature V fretless
- Mono dual gig bag
- Genz-Benz Streamliner 900
- A-Designs REDDI tube DI
- Hercules double stand
- ridiculously large & totally unneccesary Trailer Trash pedalboard (that I LOVE!!!!)
- Bergantino HT-322

Have fun, Greg! Nothing like an outdoor gig in the summer heat, try one in southern Arizona sometime.

I can't wait to hear about the gig! How are you using the REDDI?

We did a summer solstice thing on Thursday. This is the pic 10 minutes before it poured. Fortunately, we relocated before anything got wet.

Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T Combo
Genz Benz Shuttle 110 Extension Cab
The new Roscoe Century 6 - which everyone loved for both tone and looks

I also ran a DI from the Shuttle to the PA which included a powered sub.

Not as killer as Greg's rig, but it got the job done. Received MANY compliments on the bass.

We Steely Jammed the solstice

doing the koa thing

I hear Animal Antics is playing Warp Tour this year . If it is any consolation one of our regular nostatic gigs is opening for burlesque (and sometimes scary burlesque).

On the plus side, we (Steely Jam) open for The Bangles on July 4th @ a festival in Newport Beach.

I use the REDDI to go direct into the PA. When you run through a monster PA like we used this afternoon... holy balls!!!!

Well, it was a very fun gig. Great crowd, great PA, lots of fun. Kudos to the Town Of Blacksburg and Blacksburg Live Music for organizing a great event. And Midway Productions did a great job with the PA.

That said - listening back to the raw audi that I captured with my handheld recorder, there are some moments that clearly show we're not gigging as much as we used to. This one is all my fault. This was 6-7 tunes into our set, and it was the first one where I picked up the fretless... I can hear myself thinking about intonation and vibrato instead of groove. It's not until the second pass on the keyboard solo that my groove-o-meter goes off and tells me "hey, this tune isn't happening! Add some booty!". It gets better from there, but the first part of the tune is me eating a big bowl of weaksauce. Cringe. If I were gigging more, switching to fretless wouldn't be such a novelty...

Oh, well. Craig really shines on his lead work. Man, that dude can play some mean blues geetar! And JB on the keys does great, too.

"Ain't Nobody's Business" (performed by the Electric Woodshed 6/23/2012)

That's my fretless Roscoe Century Signature V running into a Genz-Benz Streamliner 900 into a Bergantino HT-322. It was recorded with an Olympus LS-11 handheld digital recorder.

Thanks for the clip, Greg. I thought you sounded terrific from start to finish...to my ears you held court, even on the few occasions Stick Boy must've been staring at girls. Echo on the guitar playing - wonderful stuff. These are my favorite types of recordings - stage mix, captured as it's heard by the cats making the music.

If you don't mind a little more detail for my feeble mind - how did you feed signal to the REDDI?

Thanks, Jerry!

The REDDI has one input and two outputs. One output is the "colored" line level send to the board. The other output is an "uncolored" instrument level "through" signal that feeds my stage amp (the Streamliner in this case).

So my signal chain is:

Roscoe -> pedal board -> REDDI -> Streamliner -> HT-322

Thanks, Greg! I (actually) get it. Too cool. I can only imagine the quality FoH sound through a good PA. The REDDI is quickly becoming a 'must have' for me. My DITTO is intermittently noisy, and fresh tubes haven't solved the problem. The sound from a quality tube DI is absolutely intoxicating...at this point I'm just cringing over the price of admission. The next time the phone rings with a session call, though...victory shall be mine!

^^ Please keep me in mind if/when you need one! I'm sure that could have gone without saying...

I'm amazed how many guys grab one off MF in the REDDI Mega-thread... much as I participate in there, you'd think they'd take the hint. I'm sure it's the every-other-week-10%-off sale MF always seems to run, but I'm happy to price-match!

Without question, Greg! You'll get the call...

I so rarely do live work with reinforcement, and of the few studio calls I get, most lean on more of an "uncolored" sound into the board - a la Radial JDI - so it comes down to that old adage....buy the tool only when you need it. Nonetheless....not if, but when.

Ah, the frustrations of a salesman.

I constantly have to price-match products too with bigger stores. (in my line of business)

I caught the last 3 of the set - you guys sounded great! Great bass sound - I could feel you all the way on Main St. I'd love to go through a system like that.

Not bad for a gig opening for some parrots.

Hah - thanks. I though I saw you scooting around behind the stage!

Too bad you missed the Alliens... man, Cameron was killing it.

Saw a little of the Alliens before my son made it very clear that it was time to go. They sounded great too!
