Envelope Filter Shootout

I've been a little torn between the EBS BassIQ that is currently on my board and the new MXR M82. So I decided to record both, and see if that helps ease my mind...

Here's the signal chain:
- my fretted Roscoe
- the pedals
- Alembic F-1X preamp
- Crest CA6 power amp
- Bergantino HT112ER cab
- Audio Technica AT2021 condenser mic
- ART Tube MP Studio mic preamp
- Lexicon Alpha USB Interface
- PC running Sonar Producer 8.5

The bass had both pickups wide open and a little bass and low mid boost. I kept the settings the same for all three takes.

You'll hear three distinct passes:
1) The bass with no effect
2) The bass through the EBS BassIQ
3) The bass through the MXR M82

Envelope Filter Shootout

I came into this favoring my EBS, but now I'm not sure. I do prefer the EBS's lower focus of the filter effect, but the MXR sounds a little more solid because you can dial in some dry signal to taste. Shoot, I might actually end up with both of these on my board...

What settings are you using on the MXR, if you don't mind me asking?

I had the MXR set like this:

DRY: 12:00
FX: 1:30
DECAY: 11:00
Q: 1:00
SENS: 12:30

And the EBS was set like this:

THRESHOLD: 11:30
ATTACK: 9:30
MODE: UP

You must ask yourself which does Boosty prefer?

Joking aside(jus' for a sec) I'd ask you, In what way will you use a filter predominately? Grooving or for Solos?

I'd like the EBS for grooving, and the MXR for solos.

If I used them in both capacities, I'd have both. (And you know you can)

God Bless, Ray

Cool! That takes me think of my old Mutron days!

They both really sound good!

The ability to blend in as much "dry" signal as you want (MXR) is a real cool feature...... but the EBS sounds really good too!

Yep! Snag 'em both!
