Hey, does this Rocket t-shirt make me look fat?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bEIjvCV8G4

Ok, I realized that I edited out the part that proves I'm actually wearing the Rocket shirt...sorry about that. But since it does make me play better , I figured I'd share this hack video anyway. Found a screamin' deal on a Zoom Q3, and since I just got my Lull jazz bass, I thought it might be worthwhile to share some video action. Man...nothin' like playin' nekkid without a metronome or fellow musicians to expose weak time.

Bada$$, Jerry! Killer looking/sounding bass, and really nice playing. Was that a Meters tune?

So how are you digging the new Lull? You've got me curious about picking up Mike's basses...

Also - when did you go and grow those ET fingers? I've never noticed how long your fingers are in your other videos! Man, nice reach you got there!!

Yes, it was a Meter's tune - Sissy Strutt (a band I currently play with does that as a sound check). Cool stuff Jerry.

Ah, thanks for the info, Pete!

Blacksburg has somehow gotten on George Porter's touring map, so he's come through a few times in the past 5 years or so. I've yet to catch him, but everyone raves about the shows. I kick myself for missing him.

Thumbs up

Glad to oblige Greg. I like playing the songs with the unison riffs, if anything it makes the practice sessions more interesting.
Not sure as to when Jerry got the ET fingers, just know that he makes them work. - "You go man, uh huh"!

Thanks for the comments, fellas. The new bass is just amazing. I was aiming for ash/maple Jazz with a bit more attitude, and....I got it! I couldn't be happier. My other Lull - same model (M5V) but in alder/rosewood - made me feel much more comfortable in placing my first ever custom order.

I've said this before, but I am just a huge fan of Mike Lull. His craftsmanship, sensibilities, and way of doing business are all admirable. I really dig his product line, which covers a lot of ground. In terms of building Jazz (and Precision) basses "the way Fender should have" I'm not sure anyone else comes close. When you factor in his pricing, it really becomes a no-brainer. The bass you saw in the video has only one + cost option - the color-matched headstock. Mike's list price on the bass is less than MSP of a few other brands who offer similar products. Anyway, I could go on and on, which is never a good thing, so I'll just say....Greg, if/when you talk to Mike (or Paul), please say hello for me.

So, the tunes for my little adventure... Cissy Strut came to mind after a gig last week, where the keyboard player quoted it during a Duke tune. The first tune in the medley has been played live hundreds of times by Victor Wooten when he was on the Mike Stern gig. It's called "Tipitina's" and it was written by Stern and none other than Jaco. Finally...kind of a stretch for the whole New Orleans theme, but while I've been recovering from my shoulder problem I've been watching a lot of NCIS reruns. It was fun learning the theme song and trying to use a little Marcus inspiration on it. Not sure on the execution, but there was goodwill behind the idea.

I plan on doing more of these vids...if no one minds, I'll be happy to share them here. Lots more basses in the fleet, and I'm thinking that playing the same stuff through the same amp might give a good idea of how unique each bass is sonically. Still working on the audio levels, but I think a solution is right around the corner.

Finally...fingers. Man, I wish. I appreciate the compliment, Greg...I think it speaks to my attempts at being (moderately) correct with my technique. My hands are actually quite short.

Oops...forgot one more thing. After one wash, the Rocket t-shirt is in the pantheon. Perfect fit...loose but not "No, smartass, I'm not pregnant!" loose. Buy one, everybody!

I've owned 2 Mike Lull basses in the past, and I'll echo what Jerry said about them. I owned both a 4 string and a 5 string, and both of them, to me, are what a jazz bass "should be".

Cool Jerry! That was like getting to visit with you in your living room! It kind of looked like the backdrop to one of the O'bama's "Fireside Chats"!

Definitely a cool looking Lull! Man, it didn't seem like it took long for him to turn that one out.

Hey Fellas, in case you're interested, I took another shot. And yes, I now have three Lulls.

The 60's alder/rosewood Jazz that Fender should've made:

Jerry,

When did you pick up #1489? I didn't know you had a burst Lull!

Fellas, that is one lazy-assed cat. She's a piece of work. Every time I got up off that stool to switch basses...she'd climb up there and stare at me.

Yes, I'm hopeless, Ray....three Lulls. That 3TB bass came in at about the same time I placed my order for the orange beast. For over two months it's been haunting me. When I got the chance to play both of them back-to-back, I knew I was in trouble. It came home yesterday, and will be gigged tonight. I've actually got five Jazz basses right now, although I've listed my Lakland Joe Osborn (does a lot of the same stuff the orange bass does).

The Osborn is lacking the low B that the three Lulls posess. And it is eerily similar in appearance to my four string Jazz which BTW has suffered a similar fate since the acquisition of a certain Blue Roscoe.

God Bless, Ray
