Jerry's hand-me-downs

Well, if you're going to buy used, might as well get it from a nice guy. Awhile back Jerry decided he wanted training lines for his Rob Allen fretless MB-2, so he traded the one he had for a new one. I picked up his old one last week. No pics yet, but a few sonic samples from two live gigs Sat and Sun. Having fun with the 4-string thang...

The Rocket Music connection - amps are Streamliner 900 and Shuttle 9.0, cab is a new Berg AE210 (companion to my older one).

Sat - first time with no drums and this percussion player

http://nostatic.com/mp3/12mar11/tenorMadness.mp3

Sun - first time we tried these tunes

http://nostatic.com/mp3/13mar11/redClay.mp3
http://nostatic.com/mp3/13mar11/sidewinder.mp3

and an old fav that took a turn for the funky after the bass solo (where I decided to use an empty highball glass as a slide:

Man, I only had a sec today to listen to the first tune, but I really enjoyed it, Todd! I'll catch the others tomorrow when I'm back at the store w/ higher speed internet.

Sounds like your Saturday gig was in a big room? Plenty of natural sounding reverb. I didn't catch the customer commentary, so I'll have to give that a closer listen tomorrow, too. Love the env filter!

The room was interesting - a two level cafe (upstairs and downstairs) that was split down the middle. Essentially it was probably a single unit in the building with two levels that added the next door unit. So it was narrow but tall. Odd shape. The Sat recordings were the S900, Sun were the Shuttle 9.0

Pics of the beast. Jerry knows how to pick 'em:

Nothing doing until we get the new building squared away, but both of those builders are at the top of my list!

The upside to Rob is his work is fantastic and his basses are totally unique. The downside is he's a very small operation so things don't happen quickly.

That said, I really could not imagine being a bass player and not owning/playing a Rob Allen, at least for the music I do.

I hope his endorsement check to you clears! LOL.

From a manufacturer's perspectve, it's got to be hard to beat hearing that kind of testimonial...

it isn't easy being green

If it is any consolation, I also maintain that I can't imagine being a bass player and not buying stuff from Rocket Music.

i hope that check clears soon...

Wow that is a beautiful bass. Can't listen to the clips until I get home.

Some day I hope to get up the nerve to buy a fretless.

Do it!! And I don't mean buy one from me, I just mean buy one.

It took me 25 years to get one, and I wish I had done it waaaaay earlier. Fretless will make you play differently if you let it, and that can in turn improve your fretted playing.

EDIT - and no courage required. You WILL suck when you first start playing it, we all do. Just don't give up for a couple weeks, and play with some sort of in-tune reference material (backing track, CD, a loop you laid with a fretted bass, whatever).

Oooops - is it me, or does Rob Allen only sell direct? I don't see any dealers called out on his sight...

Doh! I'm an idiot. One more click, and there's the US dealers page.

Only 4 dealers in the US. That smells like opportunity to me.
