Our first Peluso mics just arrived!! This is the CEMC-6 Stereo Kit (two CEMC-6 mics, two shock mounts, two regular mounts, and two windscreens). This kit streets for something like $700, and we will be selling Peluso mics shortly. But for now, I just want to experiment with some really nice mics for bass cabs, and these fit the bill.
I also received my Olympus LS-11 handheld digital recorder. We've got no immediate plans to sell these, unless I'm really knocked out. This is just for use here in the shop to do quick rig recordings or to perhaps improve the audio on our YouTube videos. Should be fun to experiment with this, too! |

Plug it into the PC, download, do a smidge of post-production (just cropping) in Audacity, and boom! Bass Wank!
There's a fair amount of hiss, not sure what's causing that... might break out the manual to read about that |

Settings for recording...settings for export from Audacity? I can't say I heard much in the way of hiss through the PC speakers. I did hear some nice playing and one great sounding bass, though! |

I set the Olympus recorder to record straight to MP3 (320kbs, fixed rate I think). I imported that file directly into Audacity, and exported to a new MP3 file using Audactity's variable rate 320kbps setting. |

I'm willing to bet you'll notice the difference if you record to 24/96 wav, and then export to 320kbps mp3 from Audacity. Just as with photos...the longer you go before compressing the data, the better....not that you didn't know that. I'm curious if you notice any difference between Audacity's variable rate and constant rate settings. I haven't, but my ears aren't as good as yours. |

Yeah, I can't really hear a difference between the fixed and variable rate MP3s. I've no doubt there is a difference, but the casual listener won't hear it.

On the reviews I've read, this sure seems like a great device. At the price point it's worth considering the competition, but the results Greg's gotten sure speak to quality.
Greg - thanks for that second clip. The difference may not be huge, but I'm hearing a notable increase in quality on the second one. The lows seem to go lower and the highs are a bit more crisp...just seems more open overall. FWIW, that's exactly how I capture my clips with my M-Audio recorder - 24/96 with editing and then 320kbps mp3 export within Audacity. |

Danny's the expert on the mic stuff... I'm a little out of my league talking about these things, but I'm learning! Peluso does appear to be the shiznitz, though. Quality like the big vintage guys for WAY less money... or so Danny tells me

Great mics for a great price, glad you are going to be selling them.

Just curious - have you got any advice on mic'ing bass cabs as far as mic placement goes? I intend to generally record three different ways simultaneously: direct, close mic (3-6 inches?) and far away mic (3-5 feet?). How would combine those in terms of panning? All to the same point, or do you spread 'em out?
I'll be experimenting, but a little direction always helps | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
